gender and welfare. not a good class. tough readings on a complex concept. ben also doesn't really know how to teach or guide discussions, and was often frustrated with us. i wish I picked a more interesting 187 class. i do not recommend. like genuinely save yourself.

I loved & learned so much from this class! The professor is lovely: interesting research, receptive to feedback, very supportive, and encourages students to come to office hours. I thought the readings were well-selected and useful, but this class did have more readings than the (one) other history seminar I took. Reading load was usually one academic book or a few journal articles per week. Apart from that, the workload was very manageable: super short weekly reading responses (discussion post), one small paper analyzing a set of readings from one of the weeks within the first half of the course, and then a big research paper due at the end. Grading was fair, if not generous.

That all being said, I think my year was the first time the professor taught the class, so assignments might be different in the future. Regardless, the professor is extremely awesome and wore a great blazer! I recommend to all who are interested in 20th century US history!
