Harrop-Griffiths is an absolutely incredible professor. I had heard various horror stories about 32B and also did horribly in 32A, but his clear lectures and very reasonable (although not easy) tests made this class a breeze in comparison. Snazzy British accent, too.
I got a C+ in this class, and got my butt kicked. But, if I could go back in time and take a different teacher, I would't. He was an amazing professor, and I would highly recommend him. His midterms are thorough and sometimes touch on stuff from earlier on in the class and the final was difficult, but everything was fair. He is the best math professor I have had at UCLA, and highly recommend, even though I got a C. THAT shows how good of a teacher he is.
He is an incredibly articulate and helpful professor who gives very engaging lectures. Even though the material was very challenging for me, I thought that he tries his best to make your experience as easy as possible. He is the best math teacher I've had so far and I would definitely recommend him.
I am beating myself up for the grade I got, but I have nothing but good things to say about Harrop. He goes by the lecture pretty quick but give one or two lectures and you will get used to the pace. Harrop is incredibly clear and is willing to answer any questions.
It needs to be said that the final for this course was WAY harder than the midterms but be curves the class so no biggie. You need to know the properties of everything fairly well because each exam will have at least one question that is just manipulation of the equations.
Don't be like me, study hard and ask questions!
Harrop-Griffiths is the best math teacher I've ever had. He's clear, explains the concepts well, and is also funny. 32B is supposed to be one of the hardest lower div maths, and yet I never felt lost in this class because he is simply that good at teaching the material. Going to lecture was something I looked forward to just because I liked this professor so much. The final was significantly harder than the midterms, but the class is curved so it's not that big of a deal.
Professor Ben has a very different way to teaching this class (most professors go straight into double integrals, but he really likes to take things from a visual standpoint). This is both very intuitive and very engaging. We didn't see double integrals until fourth week, as we went from line integrals to double integrals to triple integrals.
His lectures have a very clear format, going by definitions, drawing pictures, and then moving onto examples. He does very well in answering the questions that are asked in lecture very precisely, and also his midterms and tests are pretty fair (the midterms are mostly like the homework problems, while the final was a little more difficult but in hindsight, very fair). The only caveat I would say is that he requires you to explain your answers throughout your steps, but I would argue that is actually a benefit as it encourages you to make it easier for your grader to understand your thought process, something that will come in handy for future examinations in any subject.
Overall, I would definitely take this class again (I made some silly mistakes that cost me a part of my grade, but I did very well on the final as his preparation he gave was very accurate). He definitely makes Math 32B a much more reasonable class than other professors.
32B is considered one of the hardest lower divs at UCLA, and in this quarter I also had a pretty rough schedule. However, since I knew that it was supposed to be pretty hard, I made a really huge effort to go to office hours twice a week for HG, and these were pretty useful. He assigns homework from the book that was somewhat trickier than on the exams. The exams were mainly straight computation, with one proof-based question on the second midterm and two on the final. He did give out practice tests for all the exams, which were pretty helpful and comparable (although many people felt that for the final, this was not the case). One of the things he'll warn you is to NOT study strictly based off the practice exams, and these are mainly just an indicator of the difficulty of the exam and may not have the exact same problems/concepts. HG also had a unique order of teaching the material, which was overall really helpful and useful to understanding the material. He basically went from 1D all the way up to 2D and 3D sequentially, which helps you realize the patterns and similarities better.
Overall, HG is probably the best professor I've had so far. I took him my second quarter ever after taking Sylvester for Math 32A, and I actually felt like 32A was harder for me (this may be simply because I put in a lot more effort into this class). I would definitely take HG again for any other math class!!
Harrop-Griffiths is a very good professor and gives clear, useful lectures. Pay attention in class and learning the material will be easy. However, 32B is a pretty hard class altogether so applying the material on tests is up to your own knowledge/practice. The tests are reasonably difficult (~70% average) and the class is usually curved a bit. There is required homework which is actually graded, but there are no discussion quizzes, so discussions are optional. He also makes you write your math in sentences which I don't mind and I think makes it easier to explain your thought process and gain partial credit.
I think I'm just an idiot, which is why I got this grade. 32B is a hard class overall, but Ben really clarifies materials very well. He is articulate and goes in depth to help you understand. I really like him and would recommend him for anyone not wanting to do poorly.
