BEST PROFESSOR FOR THIS CLASS!!!! SUPER HELPFUL AND SUPER CHILL.
LOVE HOW HE"S TEACHING 185.
Overall, really great class and really great professor! The class is designed such that you do well. There were two quizzes in bash (week 3) and R (week 10), and we were given a couple practice quizzes before each one and they were very similar. The medians were all high A's.
There were also two projects. Having had some coding experience, the projects were not difficult at all. Project medians were also in the high A range. If you haven't coded at all, it's still doable and he and the TA offered office hours where they'd help you. but I will say that the content does go pretty fast so I'm not sure if everything will really stick after you take the course, so I'd recomment understanding and studying up some basic python at least before taking the class.
The class size was about 30 people, so lectures were great (mandatory attendance). He'd go through some slides and demonstrate by writing code and we'd have some in class exercises where he, the TA, and the two LA's would walk around and check on everyone several times throughout the lecture which was great. Really felt like a high school class. If you ever had any questions they were all there to help you. Overall, really great intro class!
I definitely considered not taking this class as it wasn't necessarily required for me, but I've learned so many valuable skills that I did not foresee learning. Dr. Nadel is knowledgeable about what he teaches, and this class is not at all designed to trip anyone up. Make sure to stay attentive and try not to fall behind. Office hours are also offered in person on the hill. Dr. Nadel clearly cares about his students by providing much time for help with content, quizzes, and projects/homework. I did have prior experience coding in R, Python, Java, and C++ and would not reccomend someone with no prior coding experience to take this class. Overall, I learned so much and would take again.
THIS IS ACCEPTED AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR CHEM 14BL CaSB MAJORS PLEASE TAKE IT! You walk away with experience in Linux, Python, and R which is super great to put on your resume. Not only that, but you complete 3 projects that *cough cough* would look great on your resume! However I will say, I don't think this class should be taken by people with zero coding experience. The course is a bit fast paced and rushes through core coding concepts. I would recommend having CS 31 or PIC 10A knowledge before taking this class. The professor is really helpful, but make sure to meet with the TA at office hours before submitting projects to make sure you get all the points.
