Professor Dunn is very good for MSE 104. Professor Lan came in to substitute for a day and was a little better but Prof. Dunn is very good as well. The midterms and quizzes are not very difficult and only careless mistakes or one difficult problem serves as the differentiator. The curve was my biggest worry as he does not seem to give a lot of A's and that adds some difficulty to the tests. The book for this course is simply amazing and a little bit of attention in lectures will get you the points for reasoning. Also get his old midterms and quizzes, they give you a fair picture of what to expect. The homework is also important in that regard. He also gives some extra credit points on the final. Prof. Dunn is very helpful in office hours so try to go for those if you can. He also tries to remember names which is very nice of him. Some of his reasoning questions are from his demos done in class so be sure to pay attention in class as these reasonings come in the exams for an absurd number of points. Take him or Prof. Lan if possible.
Good lecturer! He is always enthusiastic about the materials he teaches and brings in cool demos all the time. However, though his lectures give a good overview of the stuff you're supposed to learn, the key to acing the quizzes, midterms ,and finals are in doing the homework. The quizzes and midterms are straightforward and very much like homework problems. Going to class or reviewing his ppts gives you the multiples choice questions. The final was harder, but you get a double-sided cheat sheet. Overall, a good, fair professor.
