The person below me is not exaggerating. WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD. He never did example problems in class, which is a necessity in physics! I even went to his office hours to specifically ask him to go through an actual problem, and he replied, "Well, it wouldn't be fair to the other students who don't come to my office hours. Sorry." WTF? Additionally, his lectures were a joke. He basically copy the textbook onto the board. His midterms were alright, but his final was impossible. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!
This was the worst class I have EVER taken at UCLA, so far. While Patel seems like a pretty nice guy, he does not know how to teach efficiently. When he was stuck over in the UK due to the volcano and the TA took over teaching, pretty much everyone agreed that our TA was a lot better at teaching than Patel. That being said, the midterms aren't that bad, and would have probably been a bit more on the easy side compared to other physics midterms, HAD he been able to actually teach the concepts on it. The final was just a huge WTF moment - I am pretty sure that a lot of people (aka at least half of the class) had epically failed that final. Where did these concepts come from? Another big thing is that he does not allow you to bring an equation sheet to the exam, and claims that he provides all the equations you need, which is SO not true. (AKA, he didn't even put the equation for Ohm's law on the sheet even though you clearly need it...) If you know the concepts of Physics 6B pretty well, go ahead and take this class. If this is all new to you, you will not learn much from this class. The only thing redeeming about this class is that the average will be a B...... while he seems cool with his bungee jumping feats, cute bowties, and neat hairdo, his looks could never be so deceiving.
