I just graduated this June, and Carey Nachenberg is by far my favorite professor.
He has been my biggest inspiration for my years at UCLA. His slides and lectures are both incredibly clear and entertaining. He's shown caring for his students more than any other professor.
Nachenberg is an absolute inspiration. He is so smart and so talented, but he's one of the nicest and most down to earth people you'll ever meet. He somehow makes topics like Big O fun and topics like hash tables and templates easy. His slides are super helpful, and you can buy them for such a low price. He also knows when certain topics are boring, and he spices it up with arm wrestling and push up competitions (he went undefeated). I highly recommend his class.
Nachenberg is a great professor. I was enrolled in Smallberg's section but I always went to Nachenberg's; Smallberg is fine, for really self-motivated students, but Nachenberg is more organized and paced and he keeps you awake.
The course gave me so much pressure towards the ending weeks. I literally cried several times. I thought I was getting a C because I only finished half of project 3 and 4, but somehow mysteriously I got an A. Some say that they couldn't finishing grading and some say they were much more generous than they tried to appear in project specification documents. Either way I still feel that every single CS class has been the hardest challenge in my life, so in comparison later CS 32 would seem easier, but be reminded that if you can choose PIC instead, do that.
Professor Nachenberg is an excellent lecturer. He engages the class with prizes, jokes, and creative analogies. Furthermore, if you achieve an A in his class, he gives you a Symantec Internship referral. If you participate a lot, he may consider bumping your grade. The exams were of Medium-level difficulty (CS31 Final Level). If you study and practice, they are not very hard. The first 75% of the quarter are a breeze, however, watch out for Project 3 and 4. Project 3 is not hard as it is time-consuming. Most people get a 100% on Project 3. Project 4 is extremely difficult. Not only does it take up enormous amounts of time and thought, it affects your other classes as it will be a Project that you will be focusing on a lot. I would guess about 65% of the class did not fully finish Project 4. Use your time wisely and get done with Project 4 quickly so you can study for your finals. Good luck!
Excellent Professor, by far the best I've had in my two quarters here. The material covered itself isn't too bad, but start the projects early, or you'll have a very rough time. Project 3 was actually pretty straightforward, just really time consuming, but Project 4 killed me- during week 10, I pulled two all-nighters just to finish right at the deadline. The homeworks are pretty easy, and the exams are manageable as long as you do the projects and homeworks.
Not much to say, all the other reviews say it. Carey is awesome and funny. Participate in class and get to know him, that was my biggest regret! Slides are so so helpful. Advice: get the course reader and annotate it, project 3 wasn't awful you'll be fine but for some reason project 4 destroyed me so start that one wayyy in advance, tests are totally fine. You'll be fine he's an awesome and funny teacher! Take the mystery prizes!
It was the most amazing class that I ever taken in ucla. Carey is just a genius and the most amazing professor that I ever had. His lectures are always amazing and he makes sure that all students know exactly what is going on. I cant thank him enough from all students for teaching this class.
Best class I've taken. Carey is an amazing lecturer; his classes are very engaging and effective. I learned so much in 10 short weeks. The projects were fun and Carey was always so welcoming of students' questions.
Selling textbook, Data Abstraction & Problem Solving with C++: Walls and Mirrors (6th Edition) for $50. Text if interested, **********
Carey Nachenberg is my man!!! I would like to thank him for the Symantec internship offer, as without that, I would be internship-less. I have had friends who also got such offers, so don't worry, it's definitely doable to get an internship (had some who already had internship offers so they had to pass up this, which is incredible)
He is an amazing lecturer and goes through the slides in detail. The exams are open book open notes so the workload to study exams is light, but do master the material since it is a crucial part of acing technical interviews.
This class in general has too much workload, especially the projects 3 and 4. You get to finish cool projects but just put in the time.
Easy A, as long as you finish each project and homework correctly, and ace the midterms (I think 25% of the class get perfect scores on that). We never got back the scores for projects 3, 4, and the final, but it's fine. If you slack off like some of my less achieving friends did, that easy A can quickly turn into a C! You would want an A since you only get consideration for the Symantec internship if and only if you get an A or A+ in the class.
Also please please participate since you get those prize tickets and you get awesome prizes! I got the CS32 tshirt and it's amazing
