His exams are extremely difficult. Clear conceptual understanding is intensely tested.
In order to fare well in this class – attendance, participation, and office hours are crucial. He typically awards 25 points in extra credit, if those parameters are diligently met.

Econ 11 can be a very hard class but I think Cantu is one of the better professors. You will do so much better in this class if he knows your name. Go to office hours! They are also really helpful. Go to lecture and get Top Hat points if that is available, because that will help boost your grade. He says he doesn't curve, but with Top Hat and other stuff your grade can end up being better than just the midterm/final/homeworks.

Carlos is the man. You won't find another professor who's as enthusiastic, helpful, and nice as him.

I broke my writing hand the last two weeks of his course, emailed him about getting extra exam time, and then like 6 months later saw him and he asked me how my hand was doing. I'd never even spoken to him in person so I don't know how he knew that that was me, but it just goes to show how concerned and attentive he is to his students. Also, the guy actually won't stop smiling when you're talking to him--incredibly approachable.

Moreover, he genuinely tries extremely hard to make his class more worthwhile and enjoyable for his students. Few, if any, professors seek as much feedback on what improvements can be made as does Carlos. Also he's very good about responding to e-mails and making sure you don't lose points for trivial/unclear things. Like if you submit your homework online one minute late he'll still accept it, or if a question is poorly worded he won't count it against you.

That said, the class is pretty hard and is probably extremely hard for people who aren't very good at math. However, Carlos does a very good job of structuring the class to make sure that your grade is fair--you put in the work, you will get the grade.

Overall, one of my favorite professors at UCLA. Most professors, especially in math/science/econ, don't give a **** about you or your grade, and it's incredibly discouraging. In fact, I dropped the Econ major after Econ 102 because I was fed up with this. Carlos, on the other hand, tries to give you the experience you're paying thousands of dollars for. Wish I could have him for all my classes.

Well... I'm pretty sure Cantu left UCLA.

He was a super nice guy and gave a ton of extra credit, but honestly his tests were crazy hard. Even the take home midterms!!! Good riddance!! (not to him as a professor, but just to his awful tests!!)

Carlos was so bad.
He was nice but such a bad teacher. His homework assignments and exams were impossible (I got Midterm1 43% and Midterm2 38%)

He did give 10% of extra credit opportunity, but he was a unclear, overly difficult professor.

He did not curve the class so I was about to be in deep crap along with many other students

At week 6 he left UCLA for another job at Mexico. Good thing he left.
Edward McDevitt stepped in and he curved the class so I was saved with a B- in the class.

If Carlos comes back, AVOID HIM AT ALL COST
