Vichy France is a commonly misunderstood topic, and Professor Ford untangles the complexities and ambiguities that characterized the period in this class. Definitely in the top three classes that I've taken at UCLA, both for the subject matter and the way Professor Ford presents it. The texts are diverse and informative, and include films that provide a visceral glimpse of France under the Occupation. There are weekly one page, single-spaced response papers and one presentation based on the assigned readings/viewings, and a final 12-15 page research paper on a Vichy-related topic of your choice. While the paper is somewhat daunting, Professor Ford is very helpful with helping you determine your subject, developing research questions, and additionally schedules a class meeting with the History Research Librarian (extremely knowledgable and indispensable), with whom you can arrange individual appointments.
