Others might find it easy, but I found the later topics we covered in syntax difficult to wrap my head around and fully understand. (I firmly believe the only reason I got an A+ in the course was due to the midterm grade curve and the final being made optional.)

Prof. Schutze is not the most engaging lecturer, but he tries hard to be maximally clear (which is sometimes detrimental if he takes a long time to explain something) and is very detail-oriented. For example, his homework instructions and textbook error corrections are always very detailed and show that he cares about us really understanding and getting things right.

Of course this will change from term to term, but my TA (Marju) was also very helpful and understanding in preparing us to tackle the weekly homeworks, so section was well worth going to.

TL;DR -- This course is difficult but definitely doable if you go to OH/section regularly, do practice problems in preparation for the exams, and ask questions/seek help as necessary!

The class is a difficult one and there's a lot to wrap your head around. Unfortunately Schutze is a very dry lecturer at it can be hard to follow along as he is also very slow and meandering but he is very helpful if you ask for help and the TAs are always very helpful as well. You really have to be willing to go beyond just the lectures if you want to understand the material and get a good grade in the class. It is also very important to do all the reading as it can help inform things that you might have missed in the lectures.

i never learned more about syntax then with shutze, his classes were difficult and sometimes dry, but you will know more than people going into syntax II if you take this class. clear examples and justifications for choices made. hard but worth it.

If you are not in a hurry to take this class, I would advise against taking it with professor Shutze, especially if you did not have him for LING20. He teaches under the assumption that you took LING20 with him, which makes the first half of the quarter much more difficult for students who have taken another professor for LING20. Handouts are extremely dense and difficult to parse out, and his lectures are the driest lectures I have ever attended at UCLA. Just picture him reading off of the handout for 2 hours, and that's what his class is like. The class is Bruincast, and the majority of the class opts to skip class and just listen instead. Definitely go to section, though, since that's the only place where you'll be able to interactively solve problems before you have to attempt the unnecessarily difficult homework problems.

Schutze is possibly the most boring lecturer I've ever had, I rarely find myself paying attention to his lectures. That being said, he goes very in depth on topics and gives lots of examples so the material is very easy to understand. He also gives handouts of notes and often does BruinCast so it is very lax if you want to skip. Homework takes maybe around 3 hours a week so everything is very reasonable. If you can get a better professor, try to but otherwise this class is just fine.

This class was clearly presented and easy to understand due to his teaching style. Because he hands out the notes each class, the lecture can feel a bit boring because you have nothing to do but sit and listen, but it's nice to have the important points laid out for you. Overall a very straightforward class and fairly easy to do well because of his efforts on structuring it clearly.

Carson is a very interesting professor. Absolutely brilliant and knows his syntax like the back of his hand, he can just about answer any possible question you might have about linguistics. He is really clear with his words, however, the material is not of the lightest of subjects. You will need to put in the work, and expect tears of frustration for not understanding an entire lesson and tears of joy for understanding another. Overall, class is tough but very rewarding.

Honestly the best professor I've had in terms of availability, pacing, willingness to cover material multiple times, examples, and email response. Carson is engaging, funny, and very helpful. He will cover material as many times as the class needs, and will give as many examples as wanted. He does like to go on tangents, but they're entertaining and useful for knowledge. His homework is structured like his exams, and the class is overall difficult material, but definitely doable. I loved this class, and would take any class Carson taught.

Schutze is an interesting professor, I have never had one like him. He was very informative, and concise... but simultaneously extremely boring during lecture on average. I've never had a professor who is good at conveying information but at the same time difficult to listen to because he is so dry.
Overall he was very helpful out of class. At first he seems disinterested (maybe because it's an intro level course, and therefore relatively easy?); however, once students start asking questions "outside of the box" he is much more interested.
He takes feedback very well. In the first few weeks of the quarter he asked the class to submit positive and negative attributes of the class. At least for me personally, he address and fixed everything I thought was negative about the course, including things such as teaching styles and homework deadlines.
The homework is difficult but helps to get the point across and also helps with tests. His handouts and podcasts are also extremely helpful.

I would take another class with him, overall I enjoyed him.
