1) Lectures are nothing like the HW which is great because directions are also very vague! She often changed what she asked you to do on the hw half way through the week. Expect to spend HOURS on the homework just trying to figure out what you're even supposed to do, then get a bad grade on it because you didn't do it right (and yes, I asked for clarity and she just paraphrased the same instructions given earlier). Sometimes it seemed like she didn't even know what she was assigning/talking about.
2) Tests were a joke which makes me super confused about the hw difficulty and harshness on grading
3) Final is is a group project with a VERY open ended question & she urges you to interpret it as you want. I quote "There are no wrong ways to model if you provide the proper justifications" yet she docks points because she doesn't like your model. When our group met with her to go over what we had so far, she said everything was looking great, then dropped all of us a full letter grade because of the grade we ended up recieving.
Overall-- this class already sucks because of how all-over-the-place it feels in terms of content, but she makes it worse because directions are never consistent and grading is extremely harsh on content we were never taught in lecture. Sorry that you'll probably have to take it with her anyways because there are no other options! Enjoy!
Take any other teacher than Professor Johnson. The averages for the two midterms and the final was a either a D or a C, and she had the audacity to say that the performance was not a reflection of her as a teacher rather the students who dont put enough time into the class. She frequently messes up in lectures, and often confuses students as a result. I dont know a single person in the class that actually liked her. The only saving grace was that attendance wasn't mandatory, but lectures are not recorded.
For Math 31B: I averaged ten points better than average on each midterm and final and ended with a B-. The averages for Midterm one was 72.6, Midterm two was a 58 and the final was a high 60. She did not curve any of these exams and the final grade was curved less than one percentage point. There are no extra credit opportunities. The other calc class had the same midterms and final but the average was much higher. But of course this was our fault and not the fault of the professor.
31B NOT Math 42 because whoever runs bruinwalk seems to have graduated long ago and no longer updates stuff.
Let me preface this by saying that pretty much everyone I spoke to hated this class.
That being said, I didn't hate it. I thought that the p sets were engaging and I actually enjoyed solving the problems (which was nice for a change). Lectures were interesting and substantive. The TAs were very helpful and it was very interactive. Unfortunately, most of the kids taking this class are bus econ or bio majors, and I can understand how it would be very hard for them. Also, maybe I feel more positive solely because I did well.
Unfortunately, Dr. Johnson has a bad case of a pretty nasally voice, which doesn't speak much about her character, but it did make it kind of hard to listen. She was also very blunt, which was off putting.
This was definitely a hard and unclear class, but interesting, so take it at your own discretion.
MATH 31B REVIEW!
(not on Bruinwalk but this class was so bad that I felt like I had to review, didn't take math 42).
I would try to find nice things to say about a professor even when I detest their class but Johnson's rude and condescending nature makes that difficult.
- Lectures are pointless (literally)
- Homeworks are some of the longest I've ever had at UCLA (over 10 hours/week, pretty much pointless time loss)
- Her voice is very difficult to listen to for 50 minutes (that might sound like an insult, but it's not, it's genuinely something you should take into account before taking this class, her voice hurts)
- She's not very willing to give help if you approach her, not that she's very approachable in the first place.
- Midterm scores were EXTREMELY low and most were panicking coming out of the final (she seemed to think that her class just sucked since she obviously can't be given ANY responsibility for her students not being taught well)
Her class is basically Professor Arant's class copy and pasted, so you're better off taking his class. The one saving grace about this class is that the notes are very nice, which makes self-teaching the material easier, but even then they're often posted too late to be useful on the homework and sometimes even after the midterm that they were supposed to be on.
Other notes: discussion attendance is mandatory, tests were difficult this.
First MT was pretty manageable (average was ~85%), but second MT was extremely long and tedious (average was ~68%). The biggest complaint I have with this professor is that she does not curve or drop lowest midterm (unless you have a doctors note/ serious situation). As a result, if you did average on the second midterm like me, you're going to have to try your ass off just to clench an A-.
Really bad at teaching, but also has really high expectations. I've had bad professors before, but they normally know that they aren't the best at teaching and they curve the class. Based on her history of scores, she doesn't seem to curve too well, and it's surprising because she's probably the worst lecturer I've ever had. There are classes where I don't go to class and just use the textbook, and that's what you should do for her class. She teaches straight out of the textbook, but it's explained in the worst ways possible and I wanted to die every class. When she doesn't know how to explain something, she'll write a note like "pull from our brains" or "I won't go into specifics" and when you ask, she doesn't answer.
I don't know if she calls it her "humor" but sometimes her tone is just really condescending when you ask questions. On the last lecture, someone asked her to review something, and she said that she can't just make up numbers on the fly. Therefore, she did not elaborate on the topic. Honestly, she's just awful, and I would avoid her at all costs not just as a student but as a person. I've never felt more depressed in a class.
Professor Johnson is probably one of the worst professors I have had at UCLA. The homework’s easily took around 10-12 hrs and ended up having nothing to do with the exams. The midterm averages were drastically low and was extremely unhelpful when it came to revision. Honestly, don’t take this class with her or Biswal. Save your time and sanity instead.
