I had Johnson for my first quarter at UCLA. Maybe she made it easier due to earlier classes, but I found this to be a very reasonable math class. This was also thanks to my GOAT TA, Kye (shoutout to him). Long story short: do your homework as soon as it’s published, know how to solve all the problems, and you’ll be fine. She rarely tests the most difficult concepts—if anything, I only lost points on the easiest stuff (like forgetting to label “lim n → ∞”). She also gives partial credit.

Honestly, her notes are very clear and cover exactly what you need for the class, and you can always cross-reference with your TA and Khan Academy. There’s nothing scary about this class—just study consistently, attend office hours or go to the math center at least once a week, and you should be able to pull out an A 🙂. Also, make friends in this class—it really helps for studying.

Prof Johnson is a good lecturer. She does examples in class which are helpful. Exams are more difficult than homework, but partial credit is given. Uses 2 different grading schemes and used which ever scheme gives you the highest score.

I'm pre-health and this class absolutely effed up me and my friend's gpa even though we both took Calc BC and got a 4. I wish I studied harder on the Calc BC exam bc this class was genuinely HELL on earth.
Her midterms throw you off on a curveball, and although it seems to be "fair" grading, as in it seems that they will give you a lot of partial credit, THEY DON'T! I messed up early on on ONE problem in midterm one and they took off almost the whole question (13/15 points), even though I understood the entire concept, and it tanked my grade so much.
The second midterm was also hard because it is so hard to figure out what test to use, and she threw in a question that she literally said after that she expected us to get it wrong... WTF?? Aren't you literally the one supposed to teach and help us succeed in the class? And she took off like 10 or 15 points off that question out of a total of 100 on that test lol. The average was extremely low, and again, I did so bad in that midterm cuz there was BARELY any partial credit. She also graded it so late that I didn't know how well I should do in the final until the last week I'm pretty sure.
And the final... It was doable compared to the midterms BUT AGAIN IF YOU MISSED A QUESTION THERE WAS BARELY ANY PARTIAL CREDIT! I just KEPT messing up on the series bc we were just not taught what to look for during series tests, and for her series practice questions, she didn't even release an answer key so I didn't even know if I did it correctly. Apparently not, or else I probably would've been able to get a better grade. I know it sounds egotistical or an excuse, but I expected to get an easy B+ in this class if anything because I did take Calc BC and got close to a 5, and I knew all the concepts that were being taught in this class, as I just was so locked out by the end of senior year to try on the test. However, I did so bad in this class, it's not even funny.
However, one saving grace I guess would be that they are extremely similar to the past midterms, and if you manage to get ahold of one, it should be similar, but again, very hard to get a good grade, as she can throw a curveball.
ALSO (sorry if this is so out of order I am writing this out of sheer anger) THE CLASS IS 100% TEST BASED. IF YOU MESS UP ON ANYTHING ITS SO HARD TO GET YOUR GRADE UP. She did say that the lowest test can get dropped, and ur final can be 50% of your grade, but I studied so hard on the final only for it to bite me in the butt.
IDK if I even got a B- or a C+ bc she hasn't even put the final grades out and it's basically Christmas. Been moping and depressed all winter break for this. I'm not even sure I can be pre-health anymore because of this teacher... Don't take this professor, and if you are smart enough PLS take it during the summer. PLEASE. This TANKED my GPA so bad (I'm in my 2nd year) and I genuinely am close to tears as I am writing this.

1) Unclear lectures, doesn't post recordings. Takes ages to post the slides; slides are barely coherent at best. I never asked questions, but I've seen others ask a few, and get shut down immediately. She's also passive aggressive at times and is not accomodating at all.
2) First midterm was easy. 2nd midterm was extremely difficuly. Final exam was moderate (I'd say 7/10 difficulty)
3) Thank god the content itself of 31B isn't tough and you don't have to rely on the professor too much.
Avoid when possible.

As long as you go to lectures and do the homework you should be fine. There are weekly take home quizzes that are very similar to the problems done in class. Midterms are fair, questions aren't too hard and are pretty straight forward if you study. Final was exactly like the midterms.

Take any other teacher than Professor Johnson. The averages for the two midterms and the final was a either a D or a C, and she had the audacity to say that the performance was not a reflection of her as a teacher rather the students who dont put enough time into the class. She frequently messes up in lectures, and often confuses students as a result. I dont know a single person in the class that actually liked her. The only saving grace was that attendance wasn't mandatory, but lectures are not recorded.

I dont even have the words to describe how AWFUL of a teacher she is. She is so bitchy, treats students like dog shit ESPECIALLY if you have a question so dont even think to ask. There are two midterms, which is typical for a math class, except this one has the second midterm end of week 9 AND it wasn't even graded until TWO days before our final. This is actually something she said "people failing my class is not a reflection of me as a teacher" oh ok then what is it cuz there is a common denominator here bitch and it's you. You are better off just dying then taking this class tbh cuz you will want to if you have her as a professor. ALSO she doesn't curve... the average on the first midterm was a 60. have fun getting absolutely fucked.
