Dr. Sandhofer is such a pleasant person. I truly wish every professor on campus was as nice and fair a person as her. Being in her class was educational AND fun. She has truly inspired me to pursue developmental psychology. I wish I could have all my classes taught by Dr. Sandhofer. Please do yourselves a favor and take this class. I 100% recommend her. You will be satisfied. Her TA Amalia was also the best!

This is one of the better labs you can take at UCLA for the Psych major. Sandhofer is a very kind, understanding teacher and like previous reviews say, you learn how to write a research paper and do research without all the fuss of 100B. The class is fairly chill overall although it can get busier in the second half. Your grade is as follows:

25% Attendance and Participation: Just show up to each class on time and work with your groups to get 100% here.
25% Assignments: Most of them are graded on completion and just following directions. The APA Graph assignment is tricky but if you miss points, one assignment is dropped from grading overall.
25% Group Poster Project: You have several weeks to do this after your group decides on a project. Grading is based on poster content itself and presentations...most groups did really well this quarter.
25% Final Research Paper: Only ~8 pages long at max so conciseness is key! The professor does a great job teaching you about various parts of the paper throughout the whole quarter.

Like I said earlier, most classes are very chill. The first few weeks are working with random groups to do some in-class activities that focus on parts of a research paper. There is some lecturing in a couple classes but they are brief and informative, more helpful than your 100B classes of the past. You'll find out you have a lot more freedom than you think in writing! The second half of the class you form groups to come up with an original research question and use the CHILDES Database to choose corpus to observe and study as part of your own observational study to report. There are several weeks where you get days off class designed as times where you can meet up and work with your group members anywhere at anytime.

Overall it is a very low-stress class and great way to fulfill your lab course requirement. The grade distribution speaks for itself. There is a textbook but you can access it for free (prof also posts all PDFs and materials that you need on CCLE) and I honestly barely referred to it. The TA for this quarter, Arlene, was extremely kind and sweet as well!

If you're a psychology major and you need to take your lab class requirement, you should really try to get this class if you can. It wasn't super difficult, and the professor and TA are the sweetest. We had weekly assignments, a group research project (for our midterm grade), and a final paper.
The weekly assignments were basically free points as long as you turned it in. The midterm project required you and your group-mates to go to the California Science Center, come up with a research topic, and collect data. Then you made a research poster and presented it during class time. This was also basically free points, as long as you followed the rubric and had all the information needed on the poster.
Our final research paper was individual, and it's an 8-page APA-style research paper on a hypothesis or question you came up with that's supported by your collected data. This was a little more difficult if you're not the best at writing a professional research paper, but the professor and TA were super helpful with answering questions.

This course requires attendance and had one big project as the final. She does require trips to the California science center for the group projects but other than that the class is super easy. Highly recommend the course, it is very low-maintenance and professor Sandhofer is very communicative and keeps the class interesting.

I was extremely worried about taking my lab requirement for psych because I thought it was going to be another 100B. However, this was not the case. This class was very chill and laidback. Sandhofer is super approachable and helpful. Whenever I went to her office hours with questions about my paper, I came out feeling very relieved. The class is broken down as follows, 25% class participation which btw just means you actively working in your group, 25% assignments (drops the lowest one) , 25% group presentation and 25% paper. This breakdown makes it so that your grade isn't heavily weighed on your paper which is nice because it eliminates a lot of the stress that comes with writing. Overall, I would definitely recommend taking your lab with Sandhofer. There are no tests and no lectures either which is nice because it doesn't feel like a regular class.

This class was so interesting! You learn a lot about research methods (not the gross kind from 100B) because she actually is the head of a developmental research lab at UCLA. The workload was not bad at all and it’s easy to get an A if you do all that’s required! Sandhofer is such a sweet person and makes class interesting!

I hate saying this class is easy, because it was so enjoyable and I learned a lot. This class is filled with many fun activities and I would highly recommend anyone finishing their psych lab requirement to take this class. There's no extra credit, but you won't need it with the way this class breaks down.

25% attendance/participation
25% poster presentation
25% paper assignment

The best part about this class is how Sandhofer wants everyone to write real research papers, not like the ones you've written in 100b.

Best psych lab! It is not hard to do well. The homework assignments are not hard to do and the final paper has to be a maximum of 8 pages-mine was about only 6.
THe professor is very nice and helpful and you can actually learn while still getting an A in the class. I really recommend this class for anybody who wants an easier lab.

This professor was truly helpful. Even though the class at times seemed like kindergarden, I enjoyed it. Go to office hours and ask for help about the final paper. I received an A+ in the class. There was only a final paper, a final group presentation, and 18 different homework assignment. Attendance was also mandatory but everyone was allowed two absences. There is some outside of class time needed however we did have days where there was no class. Overall, awesome and extremely educated professor in this field.
