Winter 2025 - This class was cross listed so it is also Chicanos in Film/Video M114. The reviewer below sounds like a boring person, imo, because this class was so fun! They were right that she tells stories about her life but not all the time. The stories are funny and have always been relevant to our discussion, at least the ones she mentioned in the class I took. I took this class online through Zoom. Each week, we watched a film and had light, interesting readings. The class consisted of five short journals (less than 500 words), and you could choose any five weeks out of the ten to complete them, which made it super flexible. We had a midterm paper and a very easy creative project where you just picked a theme from the course and used it in any kind of creative work. You could draw, make a video, a TikTok, write a poem, make a collage, etc. and all you had to do was write one paragraph explaining how it connected to the class. Participation is a must in this class, but all you need to do is share your opinions in class and sometimes reply with a couple of sentences to a discussion post the few times she posts them. It might sound annoying, but the topics and films are SO fun that talking never feels like a chore. For me, it honestly felt like I was just discussing the films or something I read with a friend because this professor is so funny and lively. This is an easy A, and you learn so much. I looked forward to class with her every week. My TA, Briceida, was also very sweet. I'm a senior, and this is my favorite class I’ve taken at UCLA. :)

Fall 2022 - This was my first class at UCLA as a transfer student and it was AMAZING! I enjoyed this class a lot and I was able to connect with my roots. The class consisted of 5 journal entries that were 500 words each, double-spaced, and about the film of the week (she provides 10 journal entries but you only have to do 5, they're really easy too!). There are two textbooks (really easy read) required that went into depth about the films and needed to be used for the term paper. Each week she assigns a film to watch on your own time before class (she provides the films on canvas/bruin learn) and what chapters to read of each book (usually 1 chapter of each book). The midterm was a creative project which was super easy! She includes the rubric of what she expects and if you complete each area you'll get full points. The final was an 8-10 page term paper (double-spaced) in which you need to analyze one of the films by answering a prompt or two that she offers or you can make up you're own prompt, you must include quotes from the readings (she also sends out the rubric and instructions). Attendance is mandatory, she makes you sign in on a notebook everyday day for class. As for participation, you can either participate during class by answering questions, asking questions, commenting on something from the books or films, by talking with a partner, or if you couldn't attend class or didn't do any of the above options of participation, you can answer the weekly question in the discussion post and you don't have to respond to anyone's post. She also responds to emails quickly. 10/10 recommend this class

Winter 2025 - This is for CCAS 188: Heroes and Villains. I took this class online through Zoom. Each week, we watched a film and had light readings. The class consisted of participation points (20%), five journals (15%), a creative project (25%), and a final (40%). -The journals were 150-500 words and you could choose any five weeks out of the ten to complete them, which made it super flexible. You had to connect the film, lecture, and reading to get full points (3/3). -The creative project was the midterm. We had to pick a theme from the course and use it in any kind of creative work. You could draw, make a video, a TikTok, write a poem, make a collage, etc. All you had to do was write one paragraph explaining how it connected to the class. Everyone got full points for the project. -The final was a five-page paper. I received a great grade on mine, but I did hear from a couple of students that she graded theirs harshly. I will say that she was a little picky with the journals. I received full points for most of them but sometimes she would take off points for not discussing the connections enough which was a bit frustrating because for some of the readings, there was not much of a connection to be made or sometimes I shortened it so that I would not go over the word limit. -Participation is a must in this class, but you just need to share your thoughts in class and respond to what she calls chisme (gossip), where you share some gossip you heard or read about the person of the week. You write a couple of sentences and link the source, whether it was a TikTok, article, etc. There were 10 chismes listed, but you were only required to do five. I really enjoyed this class and would definitely take her again. Her Chicanos in Film class (M114/M117) is even better though!
