Ding is honestly a great teacher; typically Math 31B/Calc II is notorious for being the hardest in the lower division calculus pedagogy, however Ding's lectures and tests made it extremely manageable. You have homework once a week consisting of problems of various difficulty and length of questions. Majority of midterm and final questions stem from the homework and things talked about in class. He's also somewhat funny. One con is that he isn't necessarily the greatest at explaining things in multiple ways, so I'd probably save majority of my questions for the TA's. Overall, great teacher, great class, 10/10, would recommend.
- funny professor (once let a student teach b/c he was tired)
- curves exams
- allows cheat sheets (index card size)
- lectures not required nor discussions
- lectures can be a bit confusing and hard to hear and see if at back of class
- weekly homework sets due sunday
taking 31b with professor ding lowkey saved me 🙏 he was a pretty fair professor and although 31b itself is quite difficult (imo) his class was manageable. his recorded lectures were kinda hard to understand sometimes but not bad enough where i had to attend lecture. as he's a new professor, he was very receptive to student feedback and adjusted the difficulty of exams according to our previous performance and feedback. i got a 96% on midterm 1, an 84% on midterm 2, and an 85% on the final. he didn't allow a cheat sheet on the midterms, but allowed index card(s?) on the final which was super helpful with all the sequences and series content. because he was new, he also made a policy that final grades that were 90+% were considered As but i'm not sure if he'll continue to do that. homework is basically a guaranteed 100% so just do very well on the first midterm as the content is much easier and try to get around an 80% on the final and you'll be fine
I really enjoyed taking this class! His lectures were well organized and he always posted lecture notes in case you had to miss a class. He was very approachable and helpful during office hours. I thought 131A would be challenging but I believe I really understood the proofs and the content. Overall, I would definitely recommend taking 131A with Prof Ding.
Details on the class:
Homework (drops lowest score), 2 midterms (can drop 1 midterm), and a final. The homeworks were manageable given that we had a week to complete it. The exams were very fair and his practice exams and notes are very helpful.
