Easy GE, but lots and lots and lots of PUUUUREEE memorization. It was interesting but at times, dreadful because I was memorizing names and instruments for a large portion of the class.
If you need the course reader or the textbook for this class, please feel free to text at **********. Will you give the BE$T DEAL.
Really easy class. As long as you memorize all of the artist and the songs you should be smooth sailing. DO NOT BUY THE BOOKS. Just check out the book in the music library and skim through the chapters before the midterm and final. I definitely recommend this class!! I had no prior jazz knowledge and I thought it was an easy A!

Good GE to take. 2 essays (4 pages, double spaced) which are really easy considering they are on material which is covered in lecture. A midterm/final which is multi choice. And an extra credit paper which can add 3% to your final grade.
Lectures: If you dont know anybody, go. Take notes because that's pretty much all youre tested on. If you know friends who have taken it recently with him or are in your class, not really a point in going. Just get the notes from them. He's not a boring lecturer, but (as a GE) if you have other things to do then by all means...
Exams: Multi choice. Basically just fact checking. Matching artist to instruments and stuff like that. It shouldnt be hard to do if you make flash cards and dont wait til the night before. The TA will probably help you focus on stuff you need to know.
Theres also a listening portion where he plays some songs off a list he tells you and you have to know artist or some other things. Again... just dont wait til the night before the exam.
Extra credit: go to a jazz concert and write about it. There are jazz concerts on campus which are free.. just go and write a 3 page double spaced review if you feel like your other essays were bad (mine werent too great). Jazz concert was actually pretty interesting (i went to the big band concert) and review took about an hour to write..
No need to buy any books/coursereader.
My TA (Katie) helped us by pointing out stuff which we should know what wasnt covered in lecture (there wasnt much tho). And for the songs you have to know... youtube.
Summary: Good GE to take. Im an engineer who doesnt write well and had no knowledge of jazz. Obviously youve got to put in some work but this isnt bad compared to other GE's you might have to take. Plus, you learn a bit about jazz, which was actually surprisingly interesting to me.
Professor Harrison is one of the best professors that I've had at UCLA. He makes everything interesting and even says corny jokes and then laughs at himself. He made jazz super interesting (I was never ever interested in it before) and I even grew to appreciate it. The class is pretty easy but there is a handful of musicians and facts to memorize. Just don't cram everything and you'll be fine. The test is multiple choice and the papers are super easy because the topics are super broad. TAKE THIS CLASS :D One of the easiest GEs everrrrrrrr.
ALSO, I'm selling the course reader for this calss. I got it for $50 but I'm selling it for $30. Any takers?? :)
Really easy class. If you go to lecture, bring something to keep you occupied (like a laptop or something) and just right down musicians, genre, and instrument when he brings them up. You don't need to pay attention to all the other stuff. Or, don't go to lecture and get the information from a friend.
this class is super easy. the first two or three lectures were interesting, but after that they just got boring. take good notes in class since you cannot get them from the book. you have to do two papers and a concert report, which are super easy if you get going and get feedback from your TA. they will basically tell you what to change to get an A+. also, attendance in discussion is part of your grade, so go even if its boring. totally recommend this class though. the final is not cummulative and is during tenth week, and you need like 2 nights to study for the midterm and final. one to memorize the songs for it, and one to memorize names and instruments. its kind of a lot of names, but make flash cards and you'll be fine. the TAs give out study guides, so just learn the names on there. SUPER EASYYYY! take it.
