I took Ling 1 online and had no interaction with Bozzone. It's online except for in person weekly discussions with your TA and in person final. The lectures are recorded by Professor Schuch, who is very knowledgable and clear with the material. I also found the lecture very entertaining and interesting. The work load is pretty easy. There's weekly quizzes where the answers can be easily found in the lectures/course reader and there's weekly "essays" which are straight forward short answer questions.
Prof. Bozzone is very dedicated and actually wants to see her students do well. She is always open to ask questions and is very helpful during and outside of office hours. The quizzes (which are not timed so you can discuss them in groups in your own time) and essays are pretty easy although a few questions are sometimes a bit tricky and your answers need to be really specific. The online course is pretty practical because you can watch the videos whenever works for your schedule. As long as you actually put some time and effort into this class I don't see why it should be that hard. Tip: make groups and work on quizzes/essays together.
I can't comment on the professor since it was an online class but be warned the quizes are diffcult to get even an 80%. You get 10 questions based on the lecture but you can only get one wrong to get a B. Honestly, I regret taking this class. Avoid if you can
I took this class online so I actually never met the professor. The class involved online lectures (usually 2-3 hours of lecture per week), a 10 question quiz due every Thursday, and two 150 word short answers due every Friday. You also will have discussion once a week which I highly encourage you to attend. The class was basically taught by the TAs so your short answer and essay grades just depended on how tough of a grader your TA was. Make sure you have your TA skim your final paper before you turn it in and don't worry about the final because it's extremely easy (I got 102% on mine and barely studied). Ultimately, I thought this class was really interesting.
I got an A+ in this class, but I do agree with many other reviewers that that the questions on the quizzes/essays were sometimes vague. I spent hours figuring out the right answers. Yes, some of the answers were literally quoted in the lectures but there were also at least 1-2 questions each week that were super confusing and time-consuming. Is it really necessary to make the quiz that nitpicky? Isn't the point to see that the students understand the main concepts that are taught in lecture? Just make the quizzes/essays worth less of the total grade if the reason for the vagueness is to avoid "easiness" because this was just frustrating and discouraging to do each week That's just my suggestion. Anyway, the final was actually surprisingly easy considering how hard the quizzes were and you got extra credit opportunities on it too.
Very straightforward class. The concepts are super easy to grasp. Quizzes are not as bad as other reviews. As long as you watch the lecture videos carefully, it is gonna be a breeze. The final exam is even easier.
I only studied two hours for the final but still got 106 out of 100. (There were extra credit questions)
Professor is very responsive through emails since this is an online class. My TA is also really nice and helpful. She is very lenient in terms of grade. For the final paper, I got 100/100.
Again, this class is too easy but also very interesting to me, since I speak several languages personally. I wasn't quite interested in linguistic before taking this class, but now I hope to learn more about linguistics.
One of the most infuriating online classes I've ever taken. Although Professor Bozzone was extremely generous with grading towards the end of the term, the scale caused a lot of undue stress at the beginning of the term, when quiz questions were ambiguous and oddly specific since it was open notes/lecture videos/etc. TAs were relatively anal with grading as well. Granted, it is possible to do well if you're extremely detail oriented, but this course was not a pleasant experience.
I had Bozzone as a TA. The class was very stressful. The quizzes were oddly specific and due to the volume of student complaints, she made the final exam extremely easy. The class was kinda a nightmare, but most students pulled through with a decent grade at the end because so many people were angry.
