I took SOC 181 A and got An A- and it wasn't easy. The distribution above is incorrect. Your grade will be calculated as: 15% 4 in class quizzes 30% mid-term 30% final discussion section 10% attendance, participation 10% Project presentation (present in front of class) 5% Leading a reading discussion (present in front of class) --------- 93% or above is A. If you missed TA dis sec, point will be taken out. If you missed in class quiz, can't make up. Btw, the distribution of the grade history is incorrect; it is not gonna be 56.2% A and 6.2% A+. It won't be skewed towards A and above. It will be more even. I asked some of my fellow students who happens to be very bright academically and active in discussion what their grades are? B, B- ...I was a little surprised. Good Class to take if you are interested to learn about China. But Don't take it thinking it is an easy A or workable A. I didn't

Fall 2024 - Kaiting was our TA and she struck the fear of god into the Chinese students who didn’t have great English. A very harsh grader, but then again maybe that was just the rubric she was given, my theory is that it was both. I always got 18 or 19 out of 20 on my weekly memos and regularly saw 14’s or so from others. You have to put in the work to get a good grade but the topic was interesting so I was willing to do so. The delivery of lectures can be a bit bland I’m afraid. The slides were nicely detailed. Important Notes: There is attendance. No exam, final group project with presentation. Lots of writing assignments reporting on the class readings. Extra credit from filling out the feedback survey and attending the day before thanksgiving.

Midterms & Finals are unreasonable, I study my ass off & put in so much time into this class and still end up with a B. The Professor know her stuffs but the TA is really unreasonable. He does not help you to learn the subjects, he even belittles you. He is really passionate and grades really hard, especially in the presentation & the 10 pages research paper. Basically, the class is run by the TA Chaoyo Chen NOT professor Lee. I feel really stupid for signing up for soc 181A and stay in it when 1/4 of my peers decided to drop. If you want to learn about Contemporary China find someone else. If you want to be the TA's pet, you're in luck.
