I feel this class is overrated. It’s a decent elective—great if you enjoy writing and dislike tests. I did well, but it might be hard to earn an A, though an A- is relatively easy to get. I’d sort of recommend it.

There is a reason Chris Surro is the GOAT of the Economics department. Reasonable quizzes and readings. Participation during most lectures was required, but it is not difficult to fulfill. We wrote a couple papers throughout the quarter and finished off with a group presentation. Perhaps difficult if you leave everything to literally the last minute, easy otherwise.

Really cool class. We learned about the history of capitalism. A lot of quizzes that were based on readings. Lecture quizzes as well, but those were easy. Data projects and essays made up a bulk of points but were pretty self explanatory. Final project was group so not bad at all.

This class is easily the best class offered in the econ department. The subject material is basically going through the history of capitalism, and going over topics like Marxism, Hayek and Keynes, Great Recession, etc. There are two data reports, two essays, and a final group project. The professor is really clear in his lectures and you definitely learn a lot. The grading on the papers is kind of harsh, but if you go to OH and ask questions about what to write about the prof will lead you in the right direction. Grading on the data report is not as harsh, you just have to make sure to cover everything mentioned in the instructions. If you have a chance to take this class, definitely do it.

I really enjoyed taking this class with Professor Surro. His lectures were posted all online, but he made sure to keep up with his students and make classes engaging. When I took it, there were reading quizzes that were fairly straightforward and made up a good portion of your grade. There were also data requirements, two assignments that were basically data reports. Overall, I would 100% take this class again and would recommend this to any econ major.

Every econ major should take this class. Whether you strongly oppose Capitalism or strongly support it, Chris will make you second guess your opinion. This is my 3rd time taking Chris and I'd take whatever class he teaches. Also, the majority of the class is writing based, which is refreshing for an econ class. Take him!

Professor Surro is one of the department's best professors for sure! I'd take any courses taught by him as he makes even the driest topics interesting. He is a bit tough on essays, but reasonable. This was a great class, from the structure to the grading to the material itself.

TAKE HIM. The best econ prof ive taken (apart from Olivia Osei, of course).

So good with the extra credit and the assignments are super cool and engaging! I actually learnt something about the world in this class which is not common for Econ courses.

Highly recommend this class. Chris is an excellent professor who is genuinely passionate about teaching. All his assignments were very reasonable and clear, and he's really helpful during office horus too. This is an essay-based rather than exams-based class which is a nice change from the Econ prereqs. I wish he taught more electives, I would take every Econ class with Chris if I could!
