Not going to lie Chism just yaps. Yarbourgh is really good at lecturing though

Title here is misleading; should be English 70, Medievalisms (which she has taught Spring 2017 and 2018).
Chism is a wonderful professor - she is very encouraging, engaging, and passionate about the material she teaches. She definitely expects participation, but the fun thing about this class is that you can make connections to contemporary culture - Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Neil Gaiman's work etc.
This class is also very fluid; what she lectures on will depend on the questions you ask, although she has some loose structure in mind. That's not to say she isn't prepared. Chism definitely knows what she's talking about; it's just that the class can go in many different directions. And it really is just amazing to see how much she knows, and how she can make very relevant connections between medieval works / Lord of the Rings to our world today.
The class breakdown is:
50% for 2 essays, or replace 1 essay with a presentation (she says she wants the first essay to count for less and the second one to count for more to reward improvement, so probably 20% first essay 30% second essay)
30% weekly response papers, total of 8 because they aren't due the same week essays are due (though these can be used to make up missed response papers). Length of one paragraph to one page (or more if you'd like feedback on ideas)
20% participation/attendance in lecture and section
The grading for essays will be based on TA, but if you do a presentation Chism will grade you. She also grades the weekly response papers. From what I can tell, I think she is more lenient than the TAs will be. For honors students, this is probably a good class to ask for an honors contract in because she definitely wants to help and is incredibly reasonable in setting expectations for the contract. She's also understanding and gives out extensions as long as you ask 48 hours in advance.

I loved taking this class. It was pretty easy for me. Coming from a stem major, the reading/writing amount is not too much.

Professor Chism is a total nerd. In a good way. The first day of class she recited lines from "Beowulf" in the Old English and it was as if she had cast a spell on the entire class. I kid you not, you could hear a pin drop in that classroom. Her exams are easy and her paper topics are straight forward. The only thing I would suggest to get a good grade in her class is to GO and PAY ATTENTION.

Chism is awesome! She is passionate, and her lectures are both well-organized and thought-provoking.

Chism is a very passionate professor. I took her for Engl 10A and she was definitely very knowledgeable about old/medieval and renaissance literature--in her class she focused a lot on poems. However, like other english classes her workload is a little ambitious but seems somewhat manageable.

Class is structured as such: 3 papers a midterm and a final. papers are usually 4-5 pages but if she feels like people need extentions she'll grant them. In my class people had a lot going on and instead of having us turn in two papers after the midterm she had us submit a 7-8 page paper a week before the final. Papers weren't terrible, the topics were pretty decent. Tests weren't too hard either, they were pretty straight forward and definitely one of those "you either know it or you dont, you either read it or you didnt" type of scenarios.

LOVE Chism.

She is very personable and charismatic, making lectures fun and interesting to attend.

She is super passionate about her subject matter.

She can be a difficult grader, but if you are looking for a medieval class I would HIGHLY recommend signing up for her class.

Chism made me remember why I was doing the English minor, and reminded me of why I love English so much. Her passion and enthusiasm for her work inspired me when taking 10A.

I would have liked to have her as a stand-alone professor to experience her style fully and isolated but since it was a co-teaching class, I couldn't. I think it compromised the teaching quality at times, since class was sometimes rushed since she wouldn't be able to teach until a week later.

Other than that, totally recommend her!

The professor is listed as Chism, but the actual person who taught my class was a TA grad student. The class was really engaging and it was small, so there was a lot of class discussion. The books we read were super interesting (Never Let Me Go, Golden Gate, etc. ) but the essays were graded kind of harshly. However, if you need to fulfill a Writing 2, this class is super interesting.

The books we read were fantastic. We had a manageable amount of reading each night, and 3 papers for the whole quarter. His feedback in class and individually about your writing really helps you improve for your next paper. He does a lot of in-class writing and peer review workshops that will help you get a better grade on your next paper. You can also rewrite each of the first 2 papers if you're not happy with your initial grade.
