I took this during the pandemic, so it was all recorded online. It was very consistent and good, and lectures were great too. He was always available for outside help.
The only hard thing with this class was the time commitment. There was one quiz, discussion worksheet, homework problems and four lectures every week. The quiz took 1-2 hours usually, the sheet took 1 hour, the homework took 3 hours, and the lectures were an hour each.
Other than the workload, I think this class was great. It was very clear and he was a great professor overall.
Probably one of the best physics professors you can get. Quizzes every other week and then a final which combined comprised of 65% of your grade (10 per quiz, 25 final) with the rest of the points coming from homework and worksheets graded for participation. At the end he even lets you make up some of the homework points you missed so basically a guaranteed hundred. The quizzes were a bit annoying because the system was very unforgiving with mistakes and there's no partial credit but if the question was visibly bad he'd often remove them and give everyone points. He also even gave us a 24 hour final which comprised of both a kudu section as well as a gradescope portion so you get a good mix of problems (and honestly the kudu problems were much more simple than normal??). The lecture were quite nice with lots of example problems and he was super responsive to emails and I overall just had a pretty good time. Highly recommend :3
Great professor. Made this class much easier than a lot of students on other classes because he tells you what you need to know, and the homework is predictive of the quizzes and final. He spends a lot of time going over real world applications, but to be honest, I just skipped all of that. I would definitely recommend him, 10/10.
Class: Physics 1B
I thought he was a really good teacher; he seemed to put in a lot of effort into helping us understand and even did demonstrations. Who does demonstrations anymore? It was pretty easy to get good grades on the homework, though it could be pretty tedious sometimes. His tests were hard though. I got a C+ in this class but deserved it; I didn't do the homework, and that 10% of easy A would probably have been helpful.
I had him for PHYSICS 1B. He's relatively easy as far as the midterms and homeworks go, but his final was brutal. midterms for us were half MC half problems. final was all problems.
I really didn't do anything for this class... barely did the homework, never went to lecture, just studied some formulas before the midterms and finals... which worked well for the midterms, his first two midterms were easy... like if you took physics 1B and got an A you don't have to study easy, but his final was hard. large part was conceptual questions that i probably got wrong, the other ones were do-able. either way from what i hear the EE1 teachers are hard but niemann really isn't... take him if you can!
I took 6B with him. He teaches well,he doesn't confuse you, and he tells you which sections of the book to concentrate on. His midterms and final were all pretty easy if you understand the material taught during lecture(and study off the tests from the test bank). HOWEVER, he only gives out a certain amount of A's. Even if you actually EARNED the A, if you are not in the top 25% of the class, then you're given a B/B+....which really sucks because you earned a higher grade. So if you want an A in the class, you ought to do REALLY REALLY WELL on all his tests.
[oh yeah, his homework is really easy. There's even some extra credit!]
PHYSICS 1B
Professor Niemann was awesome. His lectures are very well paced. Tells the students what to study and what to ignore from the textbook. The tests were three questions with multiple parts but they were very doable. Final had 5 questions but most people who knew what they were doing finished in the first hour and half. The class is curved so it will be a struggle to get an A
You get to choose one out of two midterms. 20% HW (mastering physics) 30% Midterm and 50% final. Since everyone will choose the better score, final determined everything.
But other than that lectures were very well paced and clear. Arguably better than textbook. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
COURSE TAKEN: 6C
ABOUT THE PROFESSOR:
Niemann is monotone professor, who like any other physics professor, is usually rushed for time to complete lecture. He's like you're average not good not bad kinda guy.
THE CLASS:
6C is like a miscellaneous course for the 6 series with all the concepts seemingly having not much connection with each other. They're all like the left over topics.
HIS TESTS:
1/3 Multiple Choice conceptual 2/3 calculations and problem solving. Make sure you understand everything conceptually because the MT choice is what sets the curve. But at the same time get as much partial credit for the Free response if you're stuck.
RESOURCES:
Practice tests that he gives as well as Test bank.
The TA Office hours are very helpful since TAs are more in depth and student-friendly in problem solving and explaining.
Things I would've done differently:
Not much really. Just gotta make sure you know the conceptual aspect, because you're allowed cheat sheets for midterms and finals.
Probably one of the best physics professors. I thought the class was very fair and he explained the topics well. He also has a good sense of humor. I liked that there was not much homework. This class' difficulty is about moderate. It's especially easy if you get a past test from the test bank because he makes them soooooo similar. Overall, if he comes up as a professor for any physics class, you would be crazy not to take him!
