All Ratings and Reviews for Claire Moore-Cantwell
Professor Claire is the GOAT!! I loved Professor Claire and this course in general, and this is coming from someone who is not a linguistics major and was simply taking this class as a GE. There was roughly one homework each week, one midterm, and one final. I found the lectures and slides to be very helpful. Between the lecture slides and notes/practice problems posted to CCLE, I was able to get through each homework relatively easily. Claire gave very nice and engaging lectures, making the two-ish-hour lectures fly by. We were given 24 hours for our midterm and a WHOLE WEEK (!!) to complete our final exam, which was amazing and allowed me to do well on exams relatively easily. Overall, the material really resonated with me (basically math with sounds (?) is how I'd describe it), I learned something completely new that I had no knowledge of before, and found this course to be low-stress and relatively easy compared to my other classes, so it was a really nice GE in my opinion. 10/10 would recommend!
I took this class for my major and it was pretty easy. In lectures Claire would just explain the content from slides and she was always good at explaining concepts. Discussions were not required and I never went because the lectures were usually enough. Homework is worth 50% of your grade and was always manageable- took me on average 1 or 2 hrs a week. One thing is that your TA grades homework and exams, so hope you get a nice TA lol. There was one midterm and final, each worth 25%, and they were very similar to the slides and homework. Overall this class is very manageable and I would recommend it
This class for what its worth is okay. Took it as a GE and at first it was intimidating because Ling majors said this was the hardest class to take. As someone with no prior knowledge of linguistics this class is neither the best nor the worst. Professor is actually very easy going and explains concepts very well. Additionally she's very engaging and attentive with students in class .
Class consists of weekly homework, a midterm, and a final. Professor this year was very accommodating and instead of having a fixed time to do tests was lenient and gave us a bigger time frame to just turn it in. But a big note is who your TA is makes a big difference. Each TA has different levels in which they go in depth at the topic at hand. I had Phil and he was probably the worse one so try going for the other two.
Concepts prior to the midterm were fine but those after the midterm start getting a little confusing. Overall Professor is a good lecturer and is very accommodating. I'm sure there are way easier linguistic classes but if you happen to land this one, you're not in terrible hands.
