I had Prof. Lam for both 30B and for 30C. If I had to put him in one word, I'd say brilliant. His lectures are really entertaining. He puts fun little interactive tidbits and even refers to the internet (EG Annoying Orange) on occasion. But more importantly, they're informative.

He's also the most respectful professor I've ever seen. He makes sure to communicate with you and makes sure you know exactly what's going on in the class.

His midterms are difficult and his finals are nigh on impossible, but they're like that because they test what you know, not what he went over in lecture. This is to say, he only tests on the material he went over in lecture, but it's not just a straight rehash of the same exact stuff. What he does in lecture is the most basic version and he expects you to be able to apply it to things you've never seen before. This is how I think tests should be.

Given the choice, definitely take him. You'll be glad you did. I almost cried when I finished 30B even though I knew I'd see him again next quarter and I did cry after finishing 30C. He gives a little speech and it just goes to show you how much he cares.

Prof. Lam: Boss.

Professor Lam is an incredibly intelligent person. He is well educated in chemistry and you can learn A LOT from him. He is a difficult professor. OChem is really, really hard. You MUST study hard. But at least he is organized, actually cares about his students, and gives practice tests and review sessions prior to each exam. I recommend going to office hours as much as possible because you might hear something that will help you understand better or give you a heads up about what is really important to focus on. We were lucky to have Dr. Lam for both 30B and 30C.

I'm gonna submit this eval before I get my grade cuz I want to be as honest as I can. I had Dr. Lam for Chem 30B and 30C. He is a difficult professor, but he is very caring, available, concerned for his students. Of all the professors I have had in my life, Dr. Lam is by far, the most outstanding and best overall. Take him if you want to actually learn organic chemistry, because he does make it look easy. I am really glad to have had him as a professor, especially for a difficult course like ochem. Regardless of my grade, I feel that Dr. Lam should definitely receive a standing ovation for the dedication he put into teaching us.

I had Dr.Lam for 30B and 30C. He is by far the most caring professor I have ever had in UCLA. He is very approachable and easy to talk to. His office hour always go overtime because he wants to stay there until there is no question. His practice exam is always harder than the actual exam. I guess the purpose of that is to make us study harder.

In terms of exams. If you study and you will do fine. His exams are fair, and allow us to answer based on what we learned.

Even though he is a postdoc, I hope that he will become a full time professor eventually because he makes ochem looks easy.
