He is one of the most intellectual and well-read professors I have had the privilege of meeting at UCLA. His understanding of American Political Thought astounds me, especially since his field of expertise is Election Law. Professor Lowenstein is a warm, kind-hearted, fair, and confrontational instructor and really cares about learning. Seriously, though, imagine taking a Ivy-League styled seminar at the undergraduate level from a Postgraduate scholar, who expects excellence from his students. Professor Lowenstein genuinely cares about his students actually learning something meaningful, not solely limited to the subject matter.
The readings were reasonable in terms of time and effort needed, and in terms of quality, were magnificent. The course consisted of three papers, of which he applied his own grading system he has used in the Law School. This course is far from an easy A course, which shouldn't matter. If you want to get your tuition's worth, take this class. In fact take all the classes offered by him in CLAFI. I promise you, you won't regret it. I sure don't.

The class readings were exceptional. My only qualm with the class was that we didn't have the opportunity to discuss the text more amongst ourselves (students). Professor Lowenstein is an exceptionally knowledgeable professor but he would tend to hijack the conversation. I can't complain too much, though, because he certainly took it easy on us... only three 4-5 page papers for the class (no mid-term or final), and he was a fair grader (maybe even too easy, a lot of us procrastinated to the last minute on our first paper and still got good grades).
