You will be writing essays on extremely interesting topics relevant to engineers and watching film snippets in classroom! Although there are summaries as homework, you are not expected to put much effort into them. The lectures are actually intriguing discussions on the current science topics rather than a commentary on the boring mechanics of English writing. You can even earn extra credit sometimes! I believe this is the best writing class for engineers in UCLA.
I enjoyed this class. Prof Sussman gives a lot of feedback for your essays, and it's not hard to get a good grade on them if you go to office hours and hand in your rough drafts.
He's chill and I feel he doesn't really care if you're late or don't show up as long as you don't miss too many classes and hand in your essays. He shows us film clips and sometimes talks about random things unrelated to the assignments, but still reasonably engaging.
I felt this class was pretty easy. The essay topics were a little bit confusing to me, and took a lot of time planning and researching, but if you go to office hours/talk to him in class it won't be too difficult.
Enjoyed the class. If you are not a strong writer, no need to fear. sussman is definitely helpful and is a fun class. I was hesitant about the time of the class,630‐745, but I'm glad I enrolled . The workload is really nothing to worry about
Daniel can be a little boring in class, but other than that, it is a relatively easy class. You have to write summaries to articles you read every week, but he accepts late work and it usually only has to be one page. The workload is fairly easy but can be a hassle if you let it build up. You have to write two essays for this class, which he critiques and hands back for you to write a final draft. Overall, I did not enjoy this class, but it was relatively easy and not stressful.
I really enjoyed English Composition with Mr. Sussman. He is an engaging teacher and he structured our class/assignments around relevant and interesting topics. I would definitely recommend this class, and it is pretty easy to do well.
I am an international student from China. This is my first class at UCLA as a freshman. He gave me lots of personal suggestion during the office hours. The comments for each draft are clear and comprehensive.
We need to read several documents each class. However, he would like to upload all of the materials at the beginning of the semester, so you can arrange your time appropriately.
He is a student-centered professor. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to talk with him. All in all, he is a perfect instructor.
I had a very disappointing experience with Professor Sussman as my English Professor. Despite putting in immense effort and repeatedly communicating with him about my work, he refused to raise my grade past a B. He is a very rude and dismissive person and does not attempt to help improve your grade after the first draft. He will claim that certain people are not capable of writing an A level paper and that they need to read magazines on their own time. His analogies, comparisons, and rude demeanor is not only unprofessional but incredibly discouraging. I consistently sent him gracious and polite emails seeking feedback and improvement, but he never appreciated the efforts. His attitude and lack of support made the environment hostile and demotivating. I would not recommend Mr. Sussman to any student who is serious about improving their writing skills, receiving constructive feedback, and operating in a positive learning environment.
Even though I strongly dislike writing, this class was pretty enjoyable. We only had to write two essays, and the prof gave us helpful feedback and lots of time to complete them. There were also two easy group project presentations, and sometimes we had to write summaries of assigned homework readings.
Prior to taking the class, I didn't know much about the class's subject matter (various topics related to technology/ethics). I enjoyed learning about these topics in addition to improving my writing.
I don't think the fact that the class was all engineers made a big impact on the overall experience, but it was kind of nice to be around people with similar academic goals.
Cool professor, he's nice guy and wants his students to succeed. I also like the content in the class; it does a good job of giving us an intro into the law. A law 101 if you will. I would definitely take a class with him again, and would recommend him to any other students interested in getting a crash course on legal writing. thanks professor!
