PROFESSOR DE SILVA IS THE GOAT.
Seriously though if you play an instrument and/or have any minimal understanding of music theory this class is a breeze. If not, I would recommend doing an online music theory course (musictheory.net is great) prior to the class if you’re worried about getting an A.
Professor De Silva is such a cool and funny guy and he made the 2 hour lectures very engaging.
This is the easiest music theory class available at UCLA. However, it was still difficult material if you are new to music theory. The professor is super funny and will help you a lot if you reach out. The tests in my opinion were the hardest part and very all over the place. But overall the class was kinda chill just a lot of studying comes along with it.
DeSilva is a very funny professor and will give you a multitude of opportunities to get full credit on all of your work before finals week. Although this might seem like an amazing thing, it is VERY IMPORTANT to study the material he goes over in the lecture. It can sometimes be fast-paced, especially for those who have never taken any sort of music theory, so despite having a nice casual classroom vibe, but it is very important for anyone who is taking this class to do the work and do it with integrity. You can easily get overwhelmed by the amount of course work if you do not study since everything that gets previously taught will help you understand what's upcoming. If you allocate enough time to do it, you'll be fine with the exams. Music theory is not an easy endeavor and takes a lot of practice but it's doable. Good Luck! :)
