I really loved this professor. He was the first professor we had in this course, and he made me love the cluster. Coming straight from high school into UCLA, this course and professor Cleveland really made me feel at home. He was so funny and engaging every single lecture. I would 10/10 recommend professor Cleveland. He was so awesome. Miss him.
I really liked this class and I felt like the quizzes and midterm were very straight forward. The content can get a little boring but it can be pretty interesting at times. Cleveland was one of my first professors i've had at UCLA and I thought his class was super reasonable and an easy way to start my first year. I definitely recommend this cluster to everyone.
If you're looking for a cluster that is an easy A, this one is for you. The professors rotate every 5 weeks, and every single one of them is amazing and incredibly kind. The workload was never overwhelming and the TAs are always there to help. I will say, though, even if you are interested in the environment & sustainability, the content of the class can get kind of boring. However, it is super comprehensible and honestly you get as much out of the class as you put in.
Professor Cleveland was a super chill and nice guy! I thought his lectures were sometimes boring or kind of repetitive but at the end of the day, if you're looking for an easy science GE this is the one for you. Tests were pretty straight forward and were the exact same as the sample questions he gave on the slides but just reworded slightly. Cleveland always showed such a passion for what he taught and was super willing to discuss with students to clarify confusion. I would really recommend taking this class if you are a humanities major as it is not very science heavy.
The material in this class is really boring. Tbh I went to lecture once the entire quarter and ended with an A+.
The material is easy and its open-note (iykyk). Take this class if you want a free A. My TA was the GOAT too.
Dr. Cleveland is a great presenter and explains things very clearly. He’s very engaging and I enjoyed going to his lectures. Lectures are recorded but it’s only audio and sometimes there are technology issues. However, the slides are posted online, but I find that I understand them better by attending lecture. Lots of office hours are available. I never went to them, but Dr. Cleveland is super nice so I’m sure he’s very helpful.
Asynchronous quizzes are every so often (12 mcqs) and we go over practice questions in lecture so it's easy to be prepared for it. There’s readings every week but they’re pretty short. (keep in mind Dr. Cleveland only teaches for the first 5 weeks)
Content: Genuinely interesting content about food and the sustainability of producing it. What we learn in class has to do with the food we eat and see everyday on campus, which makes you think about the content we learn outside of class a LOT (in a good way). Discussion sections are really long, but they’re used to work on our projects (4 very simple labs and 2 essays, but they’re very straightforward and the labs set you up to have a very easy time writing them)
Great class, would recommend,
Nice guy and a very easy class. We only had him for 5 weeks since professors switch. We had 2 asynchronous open-book quizzes and 1 midterm in-person using lockdown browser. He had test questions on his slides which I loved and made it very easy to understand what was expected to know. We also had a lab and an essay based on the lab which were very manageable as long as you go to discussion sections. We had readings but they were short - he would only assign specific important parts which was super helpful.
Class was pretty boring and felt like it was a repeat of APES but somehow easier. It basically felt like a liberal indoctrination class, he constantly tried to get us to be upset at big corporations and to sign up to protest. At one point he like shuttered to say the name Elon Musk. Probably a good choice of a class cause its an easy A+ and its good for getting science GEs out of the way. Kind of a pain to go to though.
He's super laidback and all of the assignments (short weekly readings and one discussion post) and quizzes were all very easy. Very likable and a little technologically challenged and sometimes it felt like he really wanted us all to become vegan but he's chill
Ok class. A little boring but the rest makes up for it. Interaction with your TA and doing work in discussion is the most important part imo.
