I took Bauer for both 5B and 5C, and although the structures of the class did change between both of them, the class was still fair in many aspects. The only issue that arose was that MT1 the test was too long for it to fit in the 50 min provide,d so the class overall had a low avera.e, this however was addresed by Bauer who made sure that MT2 was 100% doable in the 50 min and provided a curve for the midterm. The Midterm 2 and the final were fair, the homework could be difficult at times, and he does grade for accuracy; however, 1% was for accuracy, and 4% was for completion. Discussion was mandatory, but you can miss up to 3 discussions and still get full credit, the same with discussion worksheets, you can miss 3. If you miss a discussion, you are still allowed to submit the discussion worksheet for credit. There are weekly study guides that you can do for extra credit. The amount you can get seems low, but it does make a difference when you need a small boost. There is also a "Midterm analysis", this is an assignment, but if you do it well, then you can get extra points, I believe up to 2% increase in your midterm score. The lectures are recorded; however, the slides might not be posted until the class starts, so if you like to take notes before class, this might not be an option.
First of all, Dr Bauer looks like Tyler Oakley from the front but especially looks like Ed Sheeran from his left side like its insane and uncanny.
Anyways, he's pretty clear with his teaching style and his exams aren't too hard or surprising, as long as you actually pay attention and keep up in class. Has plenty of extra credit opportunities. You can tell he's passionate about the subject and wants to teach it students beyond just getting them to pass the class, but timing gets to him as he's a bit slow with getting through the quarter's material (although we also had the setbacks from the fires this quarter, so I don't know if this is always true). Would definitely recommend as one of the better physics professors, and I'll probably end up taking him for 5B if I can
Bauer was an amazing professor and I totally recommend taking this class with him!
Bauer is really clear when explaining material. He lectures well, provides good practice, and has fair exams. The midterm exams generally have a 75-80% average or 90+% average (there's no in between). Based on how the midterms go, he either makes a really hard or easy final... either way, he curves the class to have a B average, so as long as you stick with the curve you should be just fine.
Overall, he's very helpful and kind. He also offers ~2% extra credit for weekly study guides and test corrections. Discussions are mandatory which is a bit annoying. Never went to office hours, but I've heard he's good. This is a pretty standard class. So, I'd recommend taking it with Bauer if you can!
Professor Bauer is the best! Nice guy, straightforward slides + examples lecturer, also has a cat. He listens to student feedback. My quarter, the final exam destroyed all of us, and he curved it up. He also adjusted the grading scheme in our favor because of the protests going on. He's nice in office hours. The subject was really tough, but I'm glad I took it with Bauer.
