I really enjoyed taking this class. If you have the option to take Psych 120A with Professor Clewett you totally should! Although the tests were somewhat hard, if you put in the work you should be able to get a B or A on them. Lectures are podcasted (as of this quarter) and you have a weekly quiz most weeks as well as a small assignment and discussion section with a completion attendance question. 2 Exams. Textbook not really necessary. Would take another one of his classes in the future!
Like the other reviews said, Professor Clewett made 120A really enjoyable. He's definitely a newer and younger professor, but compared to most other profs in Column A classes, he is truly passionate about the material he teaches and making sure everyone is receiving a fair grade. To that extent he offered many extra credit opportunities and even on quizzes with disputed questions he took those questions out from grading. Besides that, refer to the other reviews for how Spring 2021 went, but overall, it was a fantastic experience. You do need to buy ZAPS (online labs) for $30 if the class is all online and you do need to download Respondus for exams, but overall though it was asynchronous most of the class really enjoyed their experience.
Best man that's all I have to say. The class material itself isn't super difficult to understand, but there's a LOT of information needed to be learned. Regarding David, he was one of the sweetest professors I've ever had being super generous about a lot of things + he taught fairly well. THe class consisted of 30% midterm and 30% final (proctored via. Respondus + Lockdown Browser), 15% zaps, 10% discussion, and 15% quizzes. Everything in this class was super fair, and I would advise take this class with Prof. Clewette for the best time possible.
I loved Professor Clewett and his teaching style. He’s pretty young, but he knows his stuff and teaches it well. On top of that, he was extremely empathetic towards his students. For the weekly quizzes, if there was a reasonable dispute for one or two of the questions, he almost automatically threw them out because he said he doesn’t intend to trick us. He is also very transparent about what is fair game for the exams, which are almost directly based on his lecture slides and not too difficult (all multiple choice within a reasonable time limit). For discussion, attendance is required but it doesn’t require much participation— the TA (mine was Mary and she was cool) simply reinforces the material from class. Content is actually pretty interesting, and I believe Prof. Clewett is engaging as well as understanding!! (He uses memes in his slides… believe me, he’s a chill dude). He also gives easy extra credit. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH PROFESSOR CLEWETT.
This class was not bad at all. We had a total of 6 quizzes I believe, and they were online on Bruinlearn. Quizzes were open note, which helped a lot. We also had ZAPs (you have to pay for this) that you do during discussion sections, which are basically free points. Discussion section attendance was mandatory, but you get to do your ZAPs assignment during that time, so it wasn't too bad.
Our midterm and final were done online IN-PERSON, so you brought your laptop into the lecture hall and took the exam online with everyone else. Professor Clewett allowed us one side of a paper for our midterm cheat sheet, and both sides of a paper for the final exam cheat sheet. I personally thought this was enough-- I managed to fit everything onto the page.
He also offered extra credit through SONA studies.
This is the first review I have ever left for a professor and let me tell ya'll, I absolutely loved this class, and the way professor Clewett designed it. He is very helpful, and he doesn't mind answering questions, nor does he make you feel dumb about it. Although the class might be a little long I feel like he makes the class engaging and at least tries to make us participate which beats sitting in lecture just listening. There was 1 midterm and a final when I took this class and I think personally, the midterm was a bit easier than the final. I could have gotten a B, but I slacked off on the final from so much stress so I couldn't get my thoughts in order.
but overall, 10/10 on the professor himself and the material.
If you have a chance to take any of the classes he offers please do it!
