David truly cares about his students and the UCLA arts community. He wants his students to engage with one another and share a bond which is truly commendable. That being said I am not sure if it was the year that I took this course or what but a lot of the class revolved around him and his art show. I really appreciate the work he is doing for the HIV/AIDS community but requiring that students buy his show's book (which only had one assigned reading inside) and requiring that they attend the opening of his show is a little ridiculous. Additionally, he made us pay for tickets to attend multiple theater experiences. While I have the finical capability to pay to go to these events, I am not sure if it suitable to make student grades dependent on whether or not they can afford to attend these events.
David is awesome. He is really passionate about the material and cares so much about all of his students. He wants everyone to be engaged and wants everyone to learn. He definitely cares more about being reasonable and making sure everyone is understanding and caring about the content than he does about arbitrary rule and grading systems.
Professor Gere is an incredibly caring professor and very intelligent. He wants students to voice their opinions and inspirations. I did not fully know what I was supposed to get out of the class while I was taking it, but it was an enjoyable experience
Course: Art and Architecture 10
Regardless of your major, if you can take a class with Professor Gere, do it. You will love it, and it'll be an eye-opening and uplifting experience.
I'm personally an MIMG major, but I took this art GE freshmen year because word had it that it was an easy A class. It was. It was also a class that was a breath of fresh air. Just by the way he talks, you can sense the passion Dr. Gere has for his work. He is extremely sincere, and he has the ability to take any narrow minded person and make him or her see the value of the arts. His lectures are thoroughly prepared, but at the same time, seems to flow easily. They draw you in so that you're not bored during the however long of a lecture you're sitting through.
Although I never personally talked to him, I sent him an email at the end of the quarter thanking him for his lessons. Possibly one of the best professors UCLA has to offer.
Oh, WAC 1.
I transferred out of the School of Arts and Architecture and WAC, but that's not to say that I won't be taking a class with Professor Gere again.
I think he's a really great professor. The sweetest guy ever, and very passionate about his work.
He's incredibly admirable of other professors, scholars, and speakers. He knows that some people have better answers than he does. He's very collaborative. And I think that's great!
The one thing I will say though--Professor Gere has a habit of bringing in a ton of guest speakers. He only lectured twice the whole quarter!
But when he did, I found it enjoyable. I just feel like he brought in guest speakers and brought the class to performances to avoid lecturing himself.
Hopefully when I do take another class with him like a GE or something, he will do more of the lecturing.
Overall a GREAT professor besides that fact.
He's not unfair with his assignments, he wants his students to show their creativity, and he's so approachable and even gives out compliments to his students. Incredibly friendly and wonderful guy.
awesome professor! he really cares about his students, and is so kind and approachable. his passion for social activism through the arts really shows and his lectures are interesting with a variety of guest speakers and group activities.
This man is incredible. Really, it is difficult to put into words. This class makes you think, and I hope that is what we want in all of our classes. It is not difficult - although there are a lot of places we have to go to write critiques (such as LACMA Museum, Santa Monica) but the TA's are incredible, all of them, and this class is truly inspiring. It is a great pleasure learning from Gere, one of the wisest and kindest person I have ever met. Although you may not have to take WAC 1, you must take a class with Professor Gere (whether you are a WAC major or not!).
