I really liked the Prof! I actually have no interest in Chicano studies but he actually made the subject actually interesting in class. The amount of writing and reading we have to do is a little tedious but doable. It helped me write better as a result. The only thing was I didn't do as well as I wanted to because I had no background on the topic and it was hard to write so much about something I didn't feel passionate about. The readings were definitely the worst but the prof actually made the topic interesting somehow.

I ended up with a B+ in the class.

Overall, if you have any interest and knowledge about this topic then take it for sure!
If not, maybe look at some other classes because there are easier ones for a GE. BUT it's DEFINITELY not a bad alternative at all. It may be helpful to open your eyes to the world.

While his lectures may seem dull to some, I personally found them very interesting and eye opening. Not only were the topics we discussed and readings we read very interesting, Professor Hernandez generously broke down each reading via powerpoints so that we could get the main ideas to help us with our final and midterm. He expanded on the course material and related it to current issues which I very much liked. There were 3 pop quizzes during the quarter, one of which was dropped, a takehome 5 page midterm and final, and 4 2-page response papers. Very doable. He's very fair and you could tell that he actually cares about student learning because he tries to engage all 300 kids in a discussion during lecture.

Prof. Hernandez was a pretty good teacher. I didn't think I was going to enjoy the class when I started, but he actually made the topic enjoyable. The papers (1 midterm, 1 5-page final, and 4 2-page reading response papers) were sometimes challenging but pretty straightforward. The TA's do a lot to make sure you succeed. The course reader was amazing, and the opportunities for extra credit (going to outside-of-classe Chicano-related events) make you realize how much the material is relevant to society. Prof. Hernandez tries really hard to make sure you succeed. Overall I'm really glad I took his course.

Great Class. Nice Teacher. Sometimes the lectures are boring but just snack in class it will keep you from sleeping. 1 midterm which is a essay. i recommend Michaela for a T.A. Try to talk to the professor he is a nice guy and will help you if you ask. He always offers extra credit. Enjoyable class.

A really easy class. There's 1 midterm that's actually a paper and for the most part it seemed like completion credit as long as you cited. There are also 4 2-page reading papers due but they are very easy as you can just bs something about them and relate them and you're good. There are 3 quizzes, with the highest 2 grades going to your score; they were very easy and I knew a few questions before the course. As for class, it's fairly boring sitting there, so eat your breakfast in there like I did. Readings are really good but sometimes tedious. Great professor and great TAs. Easy A as long as you know how to write liberal.

Hernandez rocks! it was fun class, and really good materials were assigned. IT was easy to speak up in class, and even though it was over 200+ kids it was easy to learn. Great selection of books and videos. 4 papers to turn in during the 10 week session, plus a midterm and final. Prompts are not that hard, just make sure you do your reading, and break down the question piece by piece. TA's were really good too

Prof Hernandez is great! He's very intellectual and teaches the class in an unbiased manner, which includes gay Latinos and their perspective. His reader is full of great articles and he doesn't overload you with reading. His lectures are informative and he always leaves room for giving your opinion or asking questions. He also likes to show a lot of films, but they're important and not a waste of your time. Great TA's and really fair take home final and midterm. Take the class, you'll like it!

While his lectures weren't very informative or helpful, the readings he picked out were incredible, and because of those alone, I learned a huge amount of information from this class, and my TA was really helpful. The tests and essays are also relatively easy, so as long as you do the readings and put in effort, its an easy A. I would really suggest this class. Despite the profesor who wasn't the greatest, its my favorite class I've taken so far at UCLA.
