Phil 31: This is an easy class if you are moderately bright. But Kaplan takes a while to get going on a lecture.
Phil 32: This class is insanely hard. You learn the material almost entirely on your own, and homework & tests were sometimes beyond the level of the book.
Kaplan's a nice person- visit his office hours.
Prof. Kaplan is quiet possibly, the most eloquent bad lecturer in the world. His mind wonders as much as he worries about the students' understanding. He is so terribly worried about everyone fully getting the material that he begins to sound like he's insulting your intelligence. I had no trouble with the class, cruising through easily to an A- (which is only cuz of the bell-curve, otherwise I would have 3 points shy of an absolute perfect) The computer program helps so much with logic. Be forewarned however, if you're techno-phobic (scared of computers) don't take this, as all the work and all the tests are done on PCs.... hehe I LUV IT.
Kaplan...what can ya say about the man? He seems like Rodney Dangerfield's long lost brother. Anyway, unlike the rest of the students, I had no problem talking to him outside of class and he is very helpful. However, he needs his TAs to do everything for him and he is quite useless without them.
The concept of Logic is at first, insane. I thought I would never be able to understand what it meant to symbolize. However, the homework problems and the computer program guide you through the class in an organized fashion. While you don't have to go to lecture (I rarely went), you should spend a lot of time in the CLICC labs practicing the problems. I got an A this way.
Oh yes...beware: Kaplan types at the speed of DARK in class!
The class itself is very easy. You don't have to go to lecture to get an A in the class. However, it's boring and not that easy because the homework takes a long time to do, even if you do go to class. Lecture is pretty useless, but the discussions help because the TA explains everything that the professor failed to do. I really don't seen a point in taking this class unless your a philosophy major. It's incredibly boring, even though I never even go to the lecture nor the discussions. The midterms were easy.
