Despite my lack of effort in the class, GEOG 4 truly is an "easy A" of a GE. I am not disappointed with myself because my grade reflected my attitude and approach towards the class. Professor Rigby is a solid professor with a decently engaging teaching style. Slides were posted online but a firm grasp of the class material must be obtained in order to earn the A, hence my B-. The class was graded by weekly one-page responses, two long essays, and a final.

I really enjoyed this class! Lectures were super interesting, even though I rarely went ... but Rigby is actually passionate and knowledgable about the subject. I would definitely recommend as a GE to anyone going into econ or would just like to have a basic understanding of global economics. The class has two papers, a weekly writing assignment of no more than 200 words (which are super easy, I just did them before discussion every morning), and a doable final - no midterm. 10/10 recommend

Rigby's class explains a lot of important economic concepts in the context of globalization and its implications. The class is primarily based off of reading responses, two papers that act in lieu of midterms, and a final. Lectures can get boring quickly with Rigby's repetition of the same concepts, but in turn, this gives you no excuse not to understand the material. Don't be surprised if your grade on one of the papers is significantly lower than the other. I got an A on the first paper and used the same methodology to write the second one. I got a C for the second one! As you can see, the TA's have very different standards for the papers. My biggest advice to you would be to start early and cite everything! The final is very fair; just make sure you know all of the graphs and vocabulary discussed in class and you should be good to go. I had Frank van der Wouden as my TA - absolutely fantastic guy! Get to know him and Rigby if you can. My only beef with the class aside from the TA's different grading is the cost of the course reader. It's $75 and you have to go buy it from the store in Westwood. Bleh!!

I did not like this class. The first couple weeks were interesting but there is an insane amount of reading that I was never able to finish. I'm a biochem major and took this class as a GE. There are 2 papers throughout the quarter and they are graded by different people. The grader on the first paper was pretty easy and i got a good score, the second grader was SUPER harsh and with the same amount of effort as the first paper I got like a C-. I would argue that this is unfair and I also think 2 papers is a lot of a non-Writing II class. I was bored by around week 3 and suffered through the rest of the quarter.

Coming from someone with little interest in economics, I enjoyed learning about the basics. Prof. Rigby makes himself very clear on important concepts and repeats the harder ones often.
