Professor Saltzberg is very approachable. He is assumed to be very busy as the chair of Physics department but he replied to any messages in Slack very fast.
If you want to get along with any experimental physics, take this class as early as possible. I took it during the second quarter of sophomore and I wish to take it earlier.
By the way, don't worry about the grade. Try to understand each lab in every step and you will be fine.
Saltzberg is very enthusiastic to teach this class. He thinks this class is super important and tries his best to give time to it. COVID really hurt this class. Even though Saltzberg sent us all the equipment necessary to do the labs at home, I didn't like the abrupt switch from virtual to actual lab experiments. If he could get us the equipment earlier, this class would've gone much smoother. I got too used to the online lab, so when we had to use the equipment at first, I was very uncomfortable. However, I must admit, I got much better at using the equipment as the quarter went along. I learned a lot about electronics and thought the class was super useful/informative. My only wish is that the labs be shortened. It's not possible to finish the given labs in four hours, especially when nobody can help you debug your circuit at home. Overall, I really disliked the class at the time, but looking back, this was very useful. No complaints on Saltzberg as the professor. He's a great guy who tries to keep you engaged.
117 with Saltzberg is an extremely useful and fun class. Probably my favorite at UCLA.
While you will be working hard (6+ hours a week in the lab, plus reports which are very lax), the material is very manageable, and the staff-to-student ratio is crazy! There’s 2 TAs in the lab and the professor drops in every hour or so.
In the end, the class is fantastic, and Saltzberg is an entertaining and very helpful professor! I would recommend 117 to any physics major who wants more experience working in a lab or interested in working in experimental research or electrical engineering.
