He's an aight professor, you get used to him or to sleeping in lecture BUT I love The Big Bang Theory and he is the technical producer of the show, which means he provides them with scientific dialogue and all the equations on the board on the show sooooooo that made him like **********0x cooler to me. Or like a **********0x more tolerable. I was too afraid to ask him for any hook-ups to the show cause it's sort of inappropriate but hey who knows, had I gone to office hours more or gotten to know the dude, maybe I could've worked up the courage. Who knows a degree from Princeton in physics could help you end up in the show biz !
Professor Saltzberg is probably one of the worst professors at UCLA, his teaching ability is comparable to that of Kenley Jung. I don't see how he recieved so many good reviews. And just to show you that I'm a little peon bitter about a bad grade, I did recieve an A in the class. His lectures don't have any substance to them, no content whatsoever. There are a billion negative adjectives that I can use to describe this idiot. This was my first physics class ever, and I've got to say I learned absolutely nothing from Saltzberg or his stupid lectures. Although his demonstrations were really cool and they did convey a concept every now and then, it was pointless to go to lecture unless you were really bored or you just wanted to get a laugh out of his screw-ups.
The only reason I could you see you talking to this man is if you wanted to drop out of his good for nothing class. Something is really wrong with this guy, and I'll never understand what. He really likes to intimidate his students, so don't even bother with this guy if you're shy.
His tests consist of a few multiple choice questions, a short answer, and a few long "work-out" problems. The work-out problems were decently fair, as most were taken from the homework. BUT, he puts to much weight on the multiple choice problems and if you're new to physics, it's really easy to be tricked.
Basically in a nut shell, JUST DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS.
I don't know what people are complaining about, but Dr. Saltzberg is an AWESOME physics professor. He actually cares enough to bring in all the supplies and do demos almost every lecture to make it easier for the students to understand the concept. If you need extra help, go to his office hours, which he has 4-5 times a week. Yes, he can be quite snappy during class but that's because the students are too rowdy and they don't pay attention. The tests are not too bad and the curve is amazing. His lectures are very interesting and interactive, so go to his lectures and do all the homework. I would definitely recommend this class.
By the way, don't bother getting help from the TA's because they either don't speak English or they talk in their own physics language that you can't understand them.
HE IS THE MEANEST PROFESSOR EVER. He is not approachable at all and he has a very short temper. He will make you feel really dumb and stupid in his office hours and often replies rudely to genuine questions. His midterms were OK, but his final was a killer. NOT RECOMMENDED for the 6 series at all...good luck if you have to take him...:-)
Saltzberg is the best physics professor I have ever had. He really knows his stuff, he went to Princeton, he genuinely cares about student learning, he is a relatively easy grader, and he is pretty funny and a very nice guy. I took this class with like 95% pre-meds and HOLY CRAP PRE-MEDS ARE SO STUPID WHEN IT COMES TO PHYSICS! Lecture is a must, discussion is a waste unless you are really stupid, tests are very fair, grading is liberal (his curve circles around a B/B-). Take his class! You won't regret it!
