I LOVE Professor Schriver!! His midterms were really similar to his past midterms. He provides ALL the equations you need for the exams. He also gives a review before each exam which is really helpful because he basically tells you the type of problems that will be on them. The only thing that was difficult for me was finishing the midterms in 50 minutes. The final was slightly harder than the midterms.
My grades:
Midterm 1: 84/100 Average: 80, SD: 15
Midterm 2: 87/100 Average: 76, SD: 15
Final: 175/200
MP: 10/10 (He gives full credit for MP even if you get some attempts wrong)
Labs: 15/15
Final Grade: A-
He didn't curve the final or the class very much for the A range. I know there was a slight curve for the B+/B range. If you struggled in 5a and 5b you can be successful in 5c with Schriver. TAKE HIM!<3
Took 5C with him, very easy. Get some old exams for the class from the test bank and review them. Do homework problems, go to lecture, and pay attention. Discussion isnt mandatory, I didnt go though if you feel you need extra help definitely go.
Honestly, if you understand the equations and concepts covered in class, you will do fine. Exams are mainly number based so if you know what formula goes with what types of problems, you will do alright. Just know the concepts since they will help you reach some of his trickier problems, which arent too bad. He gives a formula sheet with everything you need too. You could ace the class without studying if you do the homework and pay attention in lecture.
Definitely recommend him. He made physics way less daunting.
My overall impression: Schriver is a very fair professor.
PROS:
- his tests are fair (often quite easy if you get ahold of a previous exam); as long as you put in the time to study, go over the homework problems, examples in class, etc. you should be okay
- his lectures are straight forward
- he is a very, very nice guy
CONS:
- he can be hard to hear at times so I always sat towards the front of the lecture hall
- I think this class is harder than 6A, mostly because the nature of the topics covered in this class aren't intuitive; it's one of those classes where you finally get the material a couple weeks after it has been taught
Just to reiterate, Schriver is a very fair professor. As long as you put the time and effort to study and understand the material, go to his office hours if you need help, then you should do fine in the class. This is what I did and I got an A.
SCHRIVER is DA BOMB. He is super fair on his tests, and he lets you use basically a sheet to write down whatever you want.
I'm retarded at physics and got a solid B. He made it seem very doable which is nice for a change.
Super nice guy, "easy" class. Take him!!
Getting a good grade in physics with Prof. Schriver is not difficult. His exams are easy because they are essentially book problems. His teaching method is very straight forward and his class rewards diligent (not necessarily smart) work.
Be warned that you may get out of the class with a good grade but not necessarily a good grasp of physics.
Schrive is the BEST physics professor I ever have at ucla. Not only are his lecutres straight-forward, but so are the midterms (he even put the same exact hw problem on the midterm during summer session!!!) plus, he really cares that his students learn so take the class with him if you can!
Honestly, this man is the smartest choice that UCLA ever made in its faculty. Not only does he genuinely care about his students understanding of the material, but he is the MOST straight forward professor I have had. You learn Sooo much more when you can focus on the material instead of trying to figure out the ways that a professor will trick you. Coming from a student who had a difficult time in 6A, this class was amazing. I had heard horror stories about 6B but he told us what he expected from us and gave us equations for every exam (instead of the normal "go make a notecard"). He has reviews for each midterm and final which are AMAZING and you should not miss them because he outlines what he wants you to know for the exam. I cannot say enough good things about this man, I swear we all left his class wanting to be his best friend. IF YOU ARE SMART AND SEE THAT HE IS TEACHING THE CLASS YOU NEED, TAKE HIM FOR SURE! Honestly, fight to be in his class because you will not regret it.
