He is definitely not a bad person. His tests are not difficult, I have taken stats before this class, however, he doesn't test on any difficult material. His tests come straight from him practice questions which he posts answers for, so I do not know why people complain. His teaching style is all over the place, but come on! its college, you do not have to go to class! Study on your own! If you say this class is that challenging, pick yourself up, pack yourself up and get the hell out of UCLA because you are a disgrace.
He tries to teach, but he is bad at it. If you never taken statistics before, do not take this class. He does not know how to properly explain his material. He makes many mistakes and is very good and confusing you. He gives a lot of material to study, his Practice Problems and Old Exams help. However, I do not recommend to take this class with him, he just simply does not know how to teach and explain his material.
I hope you have taken stats before this class, because if the concepts are new then good luck. Even though i took AP stats he still butchered a good number of concepts for me. KEY TO SUCCESS: do ALL the practice problems and practice tests he gives you on the course website and know how to do them well. The book helps a little only because he doesn't explain things well so I would by the book used or something. Lecture: he doesn't make as many mistakes as his older reviews say, but there are still some here and there. Go to the lectures if you want an A, if your comfortable with a B then you don't really need to go.
Owned this class. But that was because I have taken stats in high school and got a 5 on the ap exam. That said, if you already know stats then this class will be a piece of cake. I didn't buy the book. All I did was go to lecture. My practice for the midterms and final were just to take the practice ones. For those of you who DON'T already know stats, prepare to get owned because he makes so many shitty mistakes during lecture and on the tests that it is HIGHLY PROBABLE that you will get confused. (A lot of the times I noticed errors that went unnoticed but I was too lazy to raise my hand.) And I have to mention that his voice gets kind of annoying. I kept thinking during lectures how he was so weird and nerdy. ECON STATS FOR THE LOSS. Oh, and ask your TA or somebody how to use your calculator to do all the stats operations. It comes as a very good double check on the tests.
Uhhh he isn't all that bad. Not very good either. I found his lectures completely pointless. I just learned everything from the book / lecture slides. His tests arent really that hard, especially if you took Stats before.
He's really quirky and strange... And his class is at 8 A fucking M in the morning. In Broad Arts. The farthest ass end of UCLA campus. I gave up going to lecture after the first midterm.
But his power point slides explain everything well enough that you don't really need to go to class. Except... he does some things in class that AREN't in his slides or the book, which is pretty annoying.
Whether you believe he's good or not... it probably won't matter, because he seems to be the only one who teaches 41. So if you're an econ major, youre bound to have him.
Do yourself a favor and do not take this class!! professor brown is by far the worst professor that I have had at UCLA so far. I put so much time and effort into this class, learning and studying the material but his tests are retarded!! and so is he.
If you have to take this class, be prepared for a quarter of hell
If you can avoid it, seriously do!! I wish i listened to everyone and waited to take it with another professor.
I don't think he's as bad as people say. It does take getting used to the flow of the class. Basically you're going to be learning Intro to Stats on your own. He does, however, provide you with all the materials to do this (sample problems, textbook, powerpoints, practice midterm, practice final).
I got a B- on the first two midterms and studied my ass off for the final. I destroyed the final and got a final grade A for the class. Math is my worst subject, so I was probably double studying for this class, but if I can get an A anyone should be able to. You have all the materials, it's 100% you.
To the unfortunate souls who are planning to take Econ 41 or this professor: I sincerely believe that this man is a high-functioning autistic or has a severe case of ADD.
The cons of Professor Brown are the following: he talks very fast (and has explicitly stated he doesn't like being recorded, but you know what, do it anyway), he goes off tangent, he does not operate in a linearly coherent fashion with his lectures (constantly went back from slides to the whiteboard to show numerical examples), and repeatedly makes mistakes while doing problems AND on his own solutions guide for the sample problems.
The pros of Professor Brown: none, quite frankly.
How to survive in his class:
1. Do the sample problems.
2. Read the book (seriously, I really mean it on this one)
3. Go to discussion sections and ask questions
4. Get a tutor or frequently attend your TA's office hours if you can't afford one.
5. Do not panic, because panicking never gets anything done.
6. Get friends to study with you. You do not want to do this alone, trust me.
7. Don't listen to the pessimistic comments from Professor Brown. Trust your instincts, study hard, and keep the goal of a good grade right in front of you at all times.
8. If necessary, to keep your anger in check, make a voodoo doll of Professor Brown and stick pins in it.
Good luck...
Had him for Econ 2 and Econ 41. Just took the Econ 41 final today. Econ 2 is just like a regular introductory Econ class, except he goes over 3 classes of lecture in one class and claims to "think that it's second class meeting of the week". Gets confused by his own work on the board A LOT. Despite of all that, I would say Econ 2 was fair.
Econ 41...all I have to say is know how to use your graphing calculator or you will be DESTROYED by your ambitious classmates who got Calculator Apps for finding even the most obscure values. He doesn't really care if you show work, as long as you get the answer right. So, no partial credit. Definitely do his practice problems, if you just know how to do them, you are already halfway to Acing the class, the other half is know how to do everything on your graphing calculator.
I want to say don't take him, but it's useless. It looks like he has monopolized Econ 41, I think anyone who has had him hearken back to the days when Hahn was still teaching it. Take him only if you can learn the material w/o outside help, because he WILL confuse you.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. ALL the negative comment below stand. Even if you are able to learn the material on your own(which shouldn't be difficult because most of it isnt hard at all), its hard to pull of an A on his tests because he adds ridiculous questions about "facts" he mentions in class. He also expects you to know the excel notation for a lot of the material...but he also refuses to put it online. Oh, and he does not care about students at all.
