Despite the issues that came up in this class, Professor Jarrett was a good instructor. She explained difficult concepts in an easy to understand manner and she was very helpful during office hours if you had any questions. Her lectures were straightforward and lecture slides got straight to the point without being confusing. It was obvious that Professor Jarrett had experience teaching and that she knew the material well. There were no problems in terms of her teaching ability.
The biggest downside was the disorganization, I do not know if it was because the TA did not care (which it seemed like he didn’t) or because of the pandemic requiring us to shift to online learning. The TA and Professor would often give out contradicting statements at the beginning of the course. We were told that worksheets were to be submitted individually but then group submission was encouraged. We were then told group submission was required until finally being told group submission was encouraged in the end. In addition, nobody received grades until the very end of the second to last week after a significant proportion of our grade was turned in without any sort of way to evaluate our progress in the class. Thankfully, Professor Jarrett acknowledged this was unfair and provided extra credit. Nonetheless, the exams were very fair and tested knowledge of lecture material and problem-solving. There were not any curveballs in terms of material that we did not cover.
Overall, what you learn is determined by the effort you put into this class. If you put in minimal effort to get the grade you want you will not have a good grasp on the material. However, if you put effort into this class you will come out with a solid introduction to biochemistry.
I learned NOTHING in this class. The lectures are so, so disorganized and often repeat themselves and yet, it is an extremely easy class with Jarrett. She is a poor lecturer and her slides are mostly just a couple words and many diagrams that she just breezes through and it is so hard to keep up. She usually has like 5-10 slides per class, meaning for the bulk of weeks 4-9, we have like 20 minute lectures.
You might be thinking that it sounds great (easy professor, short lectures), and it does have its perks, but by god, you will learn nothing. Many majors require this class, so it's beneficial for them, but if you are a biochem major, you will have an extremely poor foundation that will definitely hurt you.
The grading scheme is just two midterms (100 points each) and final (200 points), with up to 35 points of extra credit (hence why it's so easy - you can average a B on each of the three exams and still get an A with the EC). They are also open note.
She goes so in-depth in lecture and most of it will go in one ear and out the other and will never be tested. Just take note of what's written on the slides, if anything, and keep track of stuff she repeats - this is what will be tested and will be needed for you to do well. Overall: very easy class, very nice professor, but very poor lecturer. You will learn next to nothing.
Jarrett's an amazing professor and clearly knows her stuff. Her lectures were straightforward and informative without any fluff, which I really appreciated. She was always very kind and knowledgeable when answering questions during lectures and office hours. Your grade is based entirely on 2 midterms and a final so don't mess around on the exams, but she offered extra credit throughout the quarter. Honestly though, the exams weren't that bad. Just study her lectures and do the weekly worksheets and you'll be set. I would definitely recommend taking her!
I took this class online, and basically just watched her lectures and took the exams. Honestly, if this class wasn't virtual and open-note, I would have done really badly. Her lectures are very unclear, there is not logic to the organization of her lectures. She doesn't explain anything, she just goes over everything on the slide and assumes you're able to follow along. She doesn't define new terms, doesn't explain the importance of anything, and her lectures seem to go in circles with her repeating the same information or going over the same diagrams over and over with no apparent reason. She'll refer to a diagram and basically read everything listed on the diagram and then move on. I'm surprised that the rest of the reviews for this class are so positive - this is easily one of the most confusing classes I have ever taken at UCLA, and that's not just due to the challenging material. Thankfully her exams are fair, and usually doing the worksheets and practice exams are enough to prepare you for the types of questions she asks. Regardless, I would never take a class with her again let alone something as difficult as biochem.
So far this class has been going very well. The grade relies only on our two midterms and finals but the first midterm was very fair. The class is really well organized. All of the lecture slides are posted before the lectures, the lecture recordings are posted right after lecture, we have plenty of practice resources with answer keys. The lectures themselves are clear and concise and Professor Jarrett is available to answer any questions you have! So far have had a really good experience and would recommend this class.
I'm having a great experience in this class thus far! Professor Jarrett has been incredibly organized and wonderful at lecturing. We've had 2 extra credit assignments so far, worth 20 points total, which is very generous considering our class is out of 400 total points. Tests are straightforward and test exactly what we cover in class. I can't recommend this class enough! Having experienced both Professor Jarrett's and Professor Gober's teaching styles, I can definitely say I prefer this class over Gober's.
Professor Jarrett is very approachable, and her exams are very fair. Attend lecture, take notes, complete the practice exams and you'll definitely do well !
Contrary to her 153L reviews, Professor Jarrett was an excellent professor and really cared about her students' learning. She taught concepts really well and always answered questions that are asked in class. Her office hours are super helpful and she was just extremely pleasant to have a professor. Overall, would give this class like a 9.5/10.
This class consisted of two exams worth 100 points each, 6 discussion worksheets worth 90 points each, and a category called Activity worth 10 points for a grand total of 300 points. Earlier in the quarter, she made it possible to receive points for the activity by attending discussion sections, but didn't penalize students who couldn't make it to discussion. She simply weighted the activity worksheet more for those students. The worksheets were not difficult, really driving home what she wanted you to learn. You could either submit them as a group or individually. The worksheets were similar to the exams, but she also gave a practice midterm out. As long as you put effort into learning, the exams were not too difficult. Her exams are primarily based on lecture material and worksheets.
One of the downsides was they took a while to grade the worksheets and it wasn't until week 5 that we had grades back, so some people were upset that they wouldn't have the ability to improve their grade. Professor Jarrett compromised by giving us 15 points back in the form of extra credit. Personally I wasn't too mad about this because we only had 1 TA and he could only really grade so many worksheets at a time, but I understand the frustration. Another downside was their grading on the first exam. The graders were picky with the wording of the answer rather than the conceptual understanding, and some students were upset about that as well. Either way, highly recommend taking this class with her if you can.
The structure of the class and lectures were kind of odd but Prof. Jarrett is super understanding and helpful. Pay attention to what she emphasizes in class and take good notes and you'll be fine.
