this professor's lectures may not have anything to do with the exams, but the good thing about this class is that his grading system is really generous. most of the people i talked to who had him for the chem series actually got B+s and As. So ya, maybe people don't like him dat much, but it may actually be easier to get a better grade in his class than in scerri's class because everyone does bad on baugh's exams, which means the curve will most likely be generous.
...TAKE SCERRI...
Baugh's a nice guy and he is concerned about students and how much they learn in his class... he even opens up extra office hours during midterms and finals. His tests are.. somewhat random.. but not impossible. I beat the average on all the tests, but then i don't know my grade in the class yet, since Baugh is know for his incredibly slow process of grading.
I'd say you were wasting your time going to his lectures.. just go to his office hours and read the book and study through the questions.
Baugh, Delroy
OVERALL GRADE: C
RECOMMEND: Please take another professor if available
Going to Professor Baugh's lectures is almost a waste of time. He goes over the same, but USELESS materials for days... maybe weeks! He spent over 1 day talking about the basic potential energy curve, which we all should be somewhat familiar already. There is no need to spend more than 1 lecture on it. Later, he spent another week to derive the ideal gas law. His explanations on the derivative of the law is abstruse, and you can learn more from reading the textbook alone. This style of teaching goes on for the whole quarter and you will feel you have learned a very minimal amount of chemistry from this professor for the ENORMOUS amount of money you paid. (Each lecture is about 8-9 dollars of you fee!) He sometimes missed class for unknown reasons that he never revealed to the class. My speculation is that he overslept since I took a 9AM lecture. But that is just a conjecture. Anyhow, he should at least have SOME KIND of explanation to where our money went those days. (He will make them up in so-called makeup lectures that took place in the evening. Sometimes, they are not even worth it!)
His tests are not that hard, but do not really incorporate information presented in class. Again, you are better off reading the book and doing problems by yourself. With enough self-study, you can pass the class with an A with no problem. If you HAVE to take this professor, emphasis on the HAVE to, please go to your discussion. With luck, you will have a good TA that make things much more clear for you. Also, do copious problems on your own as the test problems are formulaic and easy to figure out if you have enough fundamentals down. I gave this professor a passing grade because he grades leniently. This is one good point about him. He claims that he doesn't curve early in the quarter, but he does at the end, and quite generously too. Btw, he NEVER shows up to proctor his test. Only the 4 TAs are present--shows how much he cares!
After taking Professor Baugh for Chem20B, I came away with a mixed impression of him. He's a great lecturer and really does explain each of the concepts well. He goes over each subject in detail so you really get a good feel of the theory behind each subject. However, Profesor Baugh neglects to follow his own syllabus. He often falls behind schedule and dumps a chapter or two on students 2 days before the exam. I did poorly on the first midterm, but his grading system allows students to still obtain A's despite poor midterm performances. In addition, his tests are heavily theoretical; you really need a solid understanding of the material to get high scores on his exams. Overall, Professor Baugh is great for teaching theoretical aspects of Chem 20B. Only take him if you're ready for a challenging class.
Professor Baugh presents the material very well; however, he tends to dwell on concepts and, consequently, falls behind the syllabus schedule. The midterms were straightforward, but the final was very difficult because we had to learn the last two chapters ourselves.
Prof. Baugh is a decent lecturer, provided you've been previewing the material and doing your homework. However, he is yet another one of those professors who seems to be obssessed with theory, and consequently causes application to suffer. But not so bad as some of the worst math professors, at least.
His grading system is very advantageous to the students, as is his curve (not based on a bell curve, but allows for everyone to technically get an A+).
His tests run on the harder side. He is also on the disorganized side.
All in all, don't take him as a first choice chem prof, but if you're stuck with him, it's not the end of the world.
He is very repetitive, and tends to just do stuff from the book or go into details about useless materials that causes the class to be behind schedule by almost 3 or 4 chapters! He needs to learn to be more organized with his schedule so that he covers the materials at a stready pace. But his lectures are easy to follow, but his midterms are hard.
