Professor Young was very nice and it was a very interesting class. He does talk a lot and goes way more in-depth than what you need to know; however, This class did not require a lot of time. You get homework once a week that you can sometimes finish during the class. I only studied for this class right before midterms and finals. The midterm was easier (got a 95) while the final was more difficult (got an 88). I am mad about not getting an A, but what can you do. Overall, I would say this class is easier but on a UCLA level. I still went to every lecture, took notes, and studied a lot for the tests.
This class was a mess for me. If you're a North Campus major trying to fill a GE THIS CLASS WILL NOT DO IT FOR YOU. The people who seemed to do well in the class were all stem majors- most with backgrounds in this stuff. I have never gotten a B before taking this class and desperately wish I switched it to pass/no pass. I went to every lecture and tried to take good notes but most of his slides were just pictures of space and he rambled on about physics- which btw he talks about a lot of math during lecture but none of it is on the final. I wish he was more concise and his slides were better.
super interesting class!! professor young is very passionate and his lectures are very engaging. i learned a lot of cool things and i'm so glad i took this class. discussions are mandatory, but they're super easy and u usually finish early. also weekly quizzes; easy if ur listening during lectures. the midterm and final are both mcq online.
This GE is amazing I highly recommend! Weekly quizzes, midterm, and final are all online and super easy. Discussion is mandatory but also super easy the TAs are really helpful. The class is pretty interesting and has to be hands down the easiest science (or general) GE at UCLA it’s impossible to not get an A+ tbh
Prof. Young was very passionate about his career, you can tell he really enjoys what he does. The workload is very light, as a humanities major, I would totally recommend. There is a weekly quiz that is online and the discussion is attendance based.
As a humanities major, I took this class as a GE to fulfill physical sciences, and it was great. The homework is very light, just a weekly quiz online. The midterm and final exams are online and multiple-choice. Would highly recommend!
Super easy and enjoyable class. Tests are all online, which is also very nice. I definitely recommend taking this to help balance easy and hard classes for the quarter. Discussions are pretty interesting, and the only part that has attendance. I recommend taking some notes on the lecture slides, and definitely during discussion to prep for exams!
Professor Young is really engaging. He is hilarious and you can tell he really loves his job. Despite the material being rather difficult he breaks it down really well in his lectures.
Skipping is not advised. When I attended he did not record lectures and his slides had very few notes on them so they are difficult to understand without him lecturing from them. The quizzes, midterms, and final are all online timed multiple choice question. Listening to his EXACT words are incredibly beneficial to understanding course material and getting questions right on the quizzes, otherwise you're completely lost.
I did not touch the textbook at all going to lecture is key. The workload is incredibly manageable with quizzes being weekly(ish) 10 multiple choice questions. He offered Extra Credit for attending EPS SCI department events like Solar Wednesday and Moon night, however extra credit is only applicable to the discussion part of your grade. In my discussion it you got full points for just attending. You can normally leave discussion earlier if you finish the worksheets early. I found the best way to study in this class to be studying old quizzes.
