He is nice and he posts his lecture video on line. There are a lot a stuff to memorize but if you go over the notes and slides, it won't be hard to get an A. Good luck. Want to buy the book? Email me:*************

Professor Schauble is an effective teacher and lecturer. He put me to sleep sometimes but it was probably more due to the fact that the topic we were studying at the time was dirt. Yes, he lectures about dirt, but it's not his fault. The exams were pretty easy except for the Lab Final (which is separate from the Class Final). It's a GE so I didn't think that was necessary. Plenty of easy extra credit to get you over from a B+ to an A-.

Really easy GE, the midterms are very similar to the ones in the test bank. Lecture isn't super interesting even though he's really nice and cares about his students. I recommend reading the text and you'll do really well on the midterms and final, regardless of attending lecture, which I thought wasn't really worth it.

I took this course because I heard it was an easy science GE. However, I would not recommend it to anyone. The labs are relatively easy and the material discussed in class is reminiscent of high school science, but the tests are extremely difficult and contain subject matter never discussed in class.

Lectures are extremely boring, yet podcasted. Still, I would discourage anyone outside of a related major from taking this class. It is not easy and it is not interesting. I got a C-, and I guarantee that's only because my TA was being nice.

Professor Schauble is a good lecturer, but his lectures are a bit on the boring side. He always dedicates a small portion of his lecture on recapping the end of last lecture, and I believe that helps you retain the info.

The class itself was pretty difficult for a GE. Since there is a lab portion, discussion is mandatory for your grade. Also there are two finals, one for lab and one for lecture. I would say 80% of the midterm is really simple stuff, and 15% is slightly tricky and 5% is on some obscure fact from the book or elsewhere.

The labs are simple. Just show up and take the quiz and work through a packet. If you don't finish the packet, oh well you still get the participation. If you finish early, you leave early.

I recommend you attend the extra credit opportunities. There are tons, but you can only get up to 2% extra credit. Just write a summary of the event/movie.

Schauble is a pretty nice guy, lovable dork type and all, but don't let this fool you. Oceanography is not such a "simple" or "easy" GE for a North Campus Major. I made a 10 page study guide for the final and still ended up with an 80 on that exam. Questions are super specific and I felt like I would've needed to memorize everything to do better. Now, I ended up with an A- by the skin of my teeth, but many who put less effort in than I did (which seemed excessive) were disappointed. If you know plate tectonics or specifics of plankton and algae, go for it. South campus majors, enjoy. North Campus majors, be a bit weary.

ESS 15:

Professor Schauble is the best professor I've had. His class is really fun and he is always available if you have questions to ask him.

I can never make it to his office hours because my class conflicts with his schedule, but if I want to schedule an appointment with him, he will a hundred percent say yes and meet with you in another time.

He just had a baby this quarter, and the entire class is very happy for him :)

The professor is genuinely a nice guy. I had no problem approaching him for questions, and he does manage to make his lectures interesting.

The class itself, however, is not an easy GE. I found his midterms/finals to be very specific in terms of the questions asked. Labs are easy enough to do well on, and the lab final was pretty easy.

The book has so much more extra information than is needed, but I feel like if you read the book without going to lecture, you'd do fine. Everything is podcasted so you don't have to attend.

There are definitely easier Science GE's than this class. Go take the class on dinosaurs, or solar systems, A&O 1, or Astro 5.

Upon reading these reviews, I was under the impression that this would be an easy GE for a north campus major. FALSE.
The only people who think this class is a cakewalk are South Campus. You'd think Oceanography is about dolphins, whales, and interesting material, right? FALSE. It's plate tectonics and wave movements.

The first midterm is relatively easy if you can get old tests because he recycles questions. The second midterm is a struggle. The final is even worse. He asks very specific questions.

Advice: If you do take this class, don't bother going to lecture. He posts everything online. Don't even bother reading the textbook because it's frivolous information. Get old tests from people who took the class. Take your notes from his lecture slides. Do well on the lab quizzes. That's all you need to do well.
