Quarter: Fall 2019
Grade: N/A

Interesting class, wrong professor to take it with. Most kids are IB kids so they know what they're talking about. This means averages are way higher for hard tests and it does not help that expectations on the tests arent discussed. Avoid taking it with her. She seems nice but is not the best professor

Let's start by saying she never responds to emails. There are no TAs for this class so this is the only way to get answers to certain things.

Also, she never told us if we could or how to review our midterms. The tests have 2 parts: multiple choice and analytic questions. She does not give guidelines on expectations for the analytic questions at all but expects really detailed answers that are vomited from the textbook.

In addition, there is a group project that is 30% of your grade. A book report. This book is SO difficult to understand. She holds office hours for this but frankly should explain it the book in class as well. Her grading scheme on grammar and punctuation is ridiculous for this book report. We're talking -10 for more than 5 grammatical errors.
She does not make the expectations and requirements clear at all yet expects so much. This class is difficult and she is not the professor to take it with.

Good class if you're interested in the topic. The course is not very difficult and the workload is fairly light. You could get an A just by reading the textbook without showing up to class. If nothing else, she tries very hard to help you if you seek help during office hours. Exam grading metrics is definitely not the clearest, but if you show up to office hours and reason with her and show her you understand the topic, she is very lenient with regrading. All in all, I recommend it.

Professor Elham demonstrates her specialty in macro economics and monetary policy very well during her lecture. I learned a lot from this class how capital market works and prices are determined in credit market system. Professor Elham has always brought up-to-date economic issues in to the classroom for discussion which was really helpful to gain comprehensive understanding of concepts that were taught in the class. I agree with some reviewers saying her exam questions are sometimes poorly framed, but the exam questions were still relevant to class materials and concepts, and you should be doing well as long as you are keeping up with the class materials. The reading assignment and group project can be little hectic since some people just don't want to collaborate with a team. To get a maximum outcome from her class, I strongly recommend to attend office hours and informal discussion sessions regularly. And don't be too intimidated by the workload mentioned in syllabus since it is manageable and doable in timely manner for any UCLA student .

I just took her for Econ 160 in Fall 2019. TBH she is one of the worst professors I have taken at UCLA. She gets side tracked very easily and adds no value to the slides, which are just some generic textbook slides. I honestly think she is better off standing there and just click next for the slides every 3 minutes while keeping her mouth shut. Her class is extremely boring and will not prepare you for anything. One up side(if that's you are after) is that her tests are extremely easy. I was able to finish her midterms in 20ish minutes and final in less than 80 minutes. I didn't even go to class for half the quarter.

Elham is a nice person. That being said, we need to be clear that not all nice people can be decent professors. Although she tries her best to be helpful to students in class or office hours, she's not very responsive to emails. She isn't very clear with what she expects from her students' answers on tests or on the group project. You'll not only get points marked off for not quoting her almost word for word on short answer portion of the test, but you'll also lose points for an absurd amount of points for small grammatical mistakes on your group project. If you're interested in the topic, you would be much better off to take Econ 106M.
