This professor is highly biased. I am not a native speaker and found myself always frusterated in this class. No matter how hard I tried, he didn't care because my grammar wasn't perfected. I would recommend that you take a different professor, especially if you are not a native speaker. He had a few favorites in the class and he pretty much ignored everyone else. He assigned our paper without giving us a prompt and then was surprised when people didn't do it right. He crammed all this material into the midterm even though he hadn't covered it in class. He rambles in his lectures about random things and you have no idea what you are supposed to get out of lecture. He moved our final up a week and barely told us 2 classes before. Oh yeah, he is kind of racist because he started the course saying how bad of a country Mexico is and how Mexicans always are in low paying jobs.I strongly recommend against this professor.

If you would like to learn about spanish literature(Siglo de oro)I recommend you take this professor. If you are interested in learning about Cervantes and the greatest novel Don Quijote, I would wait to take this particular professor. He is not your typical lecturer at UCLA, one who stands at the front of the class without allowing for student interaction. If you happen to interrupt him during lecture to ask a question, he will stop what he is doing until you understand exactly what he is attempting to convey. You will find that his engagement with the class makes for a better learning environment. Although he does require quite a bit of reading, you will find that his test and his grading is very fair. Also, while he may call on you from time to time, he is always polite and will never disrespect you.
