Taking this class in the online format due to the pandemic is definitely different from the previous versions of this class as I have noticed from the previous reviews. The class has been remodeled so that it is 1 hour lecture that is prerecorded and can be watched anytime of the week and 1 hour discussion that occurs with 1 of 6 TAs. The material of this course is easily understandable and mildly interesting. I mainly took this class after hearing it was an easy GE and I think that still holds up to its words. Aside from the lecture and discussion, you are required to read a "textbook" (compiled readings from different books and articles) and answer 5 questions from the lecture. There are also 4 online events you must attend which are basically just listening to a designer talk about whatever the want for an hour or so and then writing up a 200 word report. The lecture questions and the event reports were all easy points as long as you are answering the questions. I am not sure how they grade it but I got full scores on everything while spending about 20 minutes total each week on them. The discussions to me were not that helpful because but they were mandatory to attend for participation points. The midterm was an essay that was pretty easy to write because it is very subjective and the scores will vary depending on TA grading but I'd say most of the scores were pretty high. Only thing is he requires you to cite from the "textbook" so definitely do read them even though they are boring and tedious. The final was also an essay but it required more research but also not a hard write. This one required a lot more usage of the "textbook" so same advice, read! Do recommend this class if you're looking for an easy A GE.
This class was pretty easy but 3 hours is a long time to focus. Prof is really funny and the lecture is mostly interesting. There is a break in between where they take attendance. I didn't like how attendance required you to walk up to your TA and sign a paper. 300 people trying to do that at once was chaotic and horrible every time. Course reader is recommended but to be honest I stopped reading 3 weeks into the quarter. The 3 quizzes are the only thing that require knowledge of the course reader. It was also needed for the midterm paper and the final paper to source from. Midterm and final grading really depend on your TA but they tend to grade harsher on the midterm for sure. I got a B+ on the midterm but an A in the class. Overall an easy class, just a little annoying.
Selling my lightly used course reader for $20 (originally $40), email me at ************* if you're interested!
I like professor very much! This class allows me to know more about the design history and styles. For the midweek, you have to write an individual paper while the final requires a group project. The overall workload is not easy. You can comment on the weekly blogs for extra points and join some events provided on the class websites. The TAs are also very kind and helpful in giving your advice on the midterm and final. The course reader and slides are very important for the quizzes. Prepare before it.
btw. His office is super great!

the class was great, pretty easy and only met once a week which was nice. professor was funny and passionate about what he taught. truly enjoyed taking the class and learning from him- the quizzes were kinda tricky but didn't count for much of the grade anyway
This class is SUPER EASY. Slides are uploaded. The class is long and taught with lights off so might be tempting to fall asleep. Attendance is taken every class, at random. Three quizzes, drops lowest score. Honestly, never got higher than a 6/10 and still did great in the class. Midterm and final are essays, TA grades them. Midterm paper is solo and final paper is a group project but he allows if you want to work alone, just wayyyyy more work. Course reader was required but wasn't really helpful ($35). One class is a group assignment, its a "game" around campus, make to sure to finish before class ends. Laptops are allowed. Overall, easy GE. Huhtamo is super passionate about design and drops little jokes which just proves that he's a quirky guy. Easy to approach and gives a break during class about 15-20 min. for attendance.
This class was a pretty easy GE. Huhtamo is really passionate about the material and some of it was kind of interesting but a three-hour lecture on Friday mornings was tough to get through sometimes. Attendance is taken halfway through class. We had to buy a course reader from Westwood and there were three pop quizzes throughout the quarter. The questions always seemed to be super specific about little things he might mention once in lecture or a point made in of one of the readings. I would always get 6/10 or 7/10, but they didn't seem to be that big of a factor in our grade. There was also a 1200 word paper for the midterm on Halloween design culture (I got a B+) and then a 2500-3000 word group paper for the final on the history/future of design in Westwood. There were also extra credit opportunities every week to respond to a blog post on the class website. You also had to go to two DESMA-related events and write about them. It might seem like a lot but it was really pretty simple! As long as you do the work I would definitely recommend for an easy A.
