easy class. B+ grade only because I wrote my paper late at night and my paragraphs were too long? Weird, I guess I was testing their grading or something, but when they say they're going to grade on proper English, I guess it takes paragraph length into question. Whatever, it was 9 AM friday mornings for 3 hours... Took so long to finish, but easy.
This was a really easy class and I would recommend it to anyone who needs to fulfill their Visual Arts GE requirement! Prof Huhtamo presents a lot of interesting material in his classes and his TAs grade pretty easily. However, at times it was a bit hard to stay awake since it was a 3 hour lecture. There were 3 quizzes, a midterm paper on Industrial Design (you were supposed to read the book, though I only read the first few chapters) and a final time capsule project. Final grade: A
This class was in general pretty interesting!! Although it was required for my major, I would recommend this as a GE because it is definitely not too intense. There are three in-class quizzes so, I suggest you go to lectures. The quizzes aren't too hard as long as you pay some attention to the lectures. Along with these quizzes there is a written, out of class, essay as the midterm and a project for the final. Overall a very easy class... an, dare I say, easy A.
Good luck!!
This is a class that requires very little from you aside from the final project. Huhtamo has amazing lectures and I'm very disappointed in myself that I didn't go to his office hours (the lectures are 3 hours long on Friday morning; which is NOT my game time. In consequence, I fell asleep almost every week sitting second row center). Just listen to his lectures, skim through the Industrial Design book, and be creative with the final project. High quality experience, low pressure setting.
DESMA 10 was a pretty laidback, interesting class. Lectures were once a week, but 3 hours long and in the morning so it was hard to stay focused all the time. However, he does try his best to entertain us with some interesting (and sometimes downright hilarious) videos and photos. One lecture was really unique too--we were basically playing a scavenger hunt throughout UCLA. All in all, there are 3 pop quizzes, one midterm paper, and one group final project. So really, it's not necessary to take notes unless that's the only way you can pay attention. You don't really need to read the course reader either (which is only $15) and although you are supposed to make references to Industrial Design, a book by John Heskett (which is like $16 max), throughout your midterm paper, you don't really need to READ the whole book to do that. Overall, this class requires very little of you, while remaining interesting and different from the rest of your classes, and Huhtamo is a pretty funny, friendly guy. Highly recommended GE class.
Easy GE class. The class only meets once a week, however, it's a 3 hour class on Friday mornings, so good luck staying awake. Huhtamo tries his best to entertain us all, and some of his videos and objects are pretty awesome and cheesy.
Very little work, 3 pop quizzes, essay and a group project. Definitely take this if you need a visual arts GE.
I agree with the comment below: save your money and time, don't bother with the course reader. He's a very interesting guy, but his lectures leave much to be desired. They're not very well organized, the powerpoints are annoying and the only reason you really need to show up for class is to sign the attendance sheet and take the occasional quiz. If he would just structure this class better and discuss time periods or themes more in depth, then it would be a really good class. Also, don't ever expect to get any of your grades back on time, if ever.
I really enjoyed both the class and the professor himself. His lectures are mainly pictures on powerpoints, but they were fascinating and impacting. I still disctinctly remember that one picture of the impractical lemon juice squeezer.
People who take Desma 10 are very design/ fashion conscious, and if you are like minded, you will enjoy talking to the people in the class. In fact, I made several of great friends from Desma 10- which is something you rarely do in other lecture halls with over 200 people.
I highly recommend this class if you are interested in designs in ordinary, everyday life. After taking this class, I wanted to switch over to a Desma major, and I even know someone who actually made that switch.
This class may not be for everybody, but I certainly loved this class.
