I took this class during Spring Qrt of 2010. Prof. Morrell is the BEST professor or one of my top favorites I have ever had. I took the class as a sophomore and it was the best experience I could have ever received from UCLA. The research paper is 15+ pages but it is worth it especially if your dedicated to changing urban education. The TA Mel was extremely nice and open whenever I needed help .. very approachable. If I could take this class every quarter I would without a doubt. If you want to step outside of your comfort zone and learn about what students of color go through on a daily basis or what they have been through this class is a perfect place to start.
MUST TAKE THIS COURSE. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Professor Morrell's class has without a doubt changed my perspective on education.
Even though there is a lot of reading, all the readings are discussed in class.
You'll learn a lot!
Saying that Professor Morrell is the most inspiring, incredible, and the best teacher ever is actually an understatement.
First, words can't describe how incredible of a TEACHER Professor Morrell is...after already being disenchanted with classes and meaningless work, this class was a breath of fresh air. Professor Morrell made realize what learning, college, and UCLA is about; I truly looked forward to coming to class to engage myself in important and relevant topics in education and in life and I learned more in these 10 weeks about how the educational system works, how society interacts involving demographics, and about myself than I probably ever will. Professor Morrell relies on class discussions and meaningful interactions and I left each class wanting more and left the quarter with a final project that I enjoyed working on and was passionate about.
However, more importantly, Professor Morrell is the kindest, most caring, genuine professor a student could ask for. He has like 10 office hours a week and loves his students...he wants to meet you! Such a down to earth, genuine but extremely brilliant person. So many things he said I still carry with me. But I digress, Professor Morrell is amazing...the world is a better place with him in it! Such an incredible guy....I don't really know what else to say.
YES, the class is intellectually challenging, but it's stimulating, and Professor Morrell is the most inspiring professor and person, that I have ever met.
If you are a person trying to breeze by school, this isn't the class for you, but if you want to learn about life and the world, want to work hard, but be inspired, then DON'T LEAVE UCLA WITHOUT TAKING A CLASS FROM HIM!
