I took this class with Dr. Wong and Professor Krasne. Wong was definitely a better lecturer than Krasne was, so I was able to learn his content a lot more. Professor Krasne's lecturers were so hard to follow and his slides didn't make much sense. I don't think many people felt comfortable asking questions because when some people tried they were usually interrupted by Krasne. He also kind of just assumed that we knew information that we never had been taught obviously because this is an intro course. The only reason I was able to do okay on the midterm was because it was open-note. I wouldn't recommend this class to anybody who is looking for a life science GE, there are much more interesting and easy classes available.

I really wish I listened to this class's reviews before enrolling. The class was taught by both Wong and Krasne, and honestly, if you really want to take this class wait for the time only Wong is teaching. I couldn't understand Krasne's teaching and his slides were so over the place. I'm trying not to be rude, but I truly hated this class and barely got my B+. Just enroll in another science GE, this class isn't worth it.

i took this class winter quarter with professor krasne and wong. definitely would have loved this class, and at least passed, if only wong was teaching. he is direct with his teaching, test questions, and slides, while krasne is the opposite. his lecture slides were very confusing, and never really followed the reading much. his lecturing was also just kind of reading off slides or rambling, and he was really hard to follow. his study questions and questions on the midterm and final were identifiably his because of how obscure they were. it was really frustrating, i definitely could have passed the class if i had tried harder and not fallen behind with the lectures, it's really not that hard to pass, just not too enjoyable. they had also told us that they were going to apply a curve if not enough people got an a but never reached out about it.

Worst class I've taken at UCLA. Prof. Krasne is a smart and nice man but a horrible prof. His slides are confusing as is his lecturing. Ridiculous midterms and finals that solely decide your grade. Even if you think you understand class concepts, the final will destroy you. The curve is set so if less than 20% of the class gets an A then it's curved until 20% have an A. I do not think he follows this as the class obviously did poorly generally (in my opinion, its impossible that 20% got As from talking to fellow students. If you don't believe me, just look at the grade distribution), and our grades remained unchanged. Take any other class besides this. I'm convinced it was only created to demolish otherwise high-achieving students' GPAs. AVOID AT ALL COSTS

I wish I would have taken this course as a P/NP, but overall not a terrible science GE. I completely failed both the final and midterm, but somehow still ended up with a B+ from doing all the homework quizzes (you can retake as many times as you want) and being in class to get the extra credit. Never once used the textbook since literally everything was based off the slides. The course was taught by Professor Krasne and Professor Wong, and they switched about every week.

He likes to go off topic and talk about things he says "are beyond the scope of the course" and are not on the midterm//final. The TA for the class was really nice and helpful though so if anything, go to her OH

The mandatory attendance is kinda annoying because lectures are dry and quite early in the morning (9:30ish?). This class should be pretty chill if you're going for a "B" or a "pass" grade, but probably a good amount of studying is required for the solid "A". 2% extra credit if offered throughout the quarter; for assignments you're required to complete online quizzes which are only graded on completeness as long as you get at least 50% on them. I studied a decent amount for the midterm and got around 80% (around the top quartile), but I just studied 15 mins for the final (no kidding) because it was pass no pass for me and only scored 1% below the median.

if you are even considering taking this class with franklin krasne, do not do it. delete it off your class planner immediately. this man will ruin your life for the 11 weeks you are enrolled in this class, and will probably make you feel like you don't belong at this school. he is the most confusing, erratic professor i have ever had and is more incomprehensible than a 2nd grader. i slaved away for 4 days studying for the midterm and legitimately failed. without the ta, carly stewart, i probably would have failed even harder. in conclusion, just do not take this class or any class with this man.

attendance wasn't mandatory so I took notes off the slides posted online most of the time and I did well in the class. easy, light workload. I had wong and krasne, and wong was a much better lecturer. also, there's a "mandatory" textbook that is hard to find and costs $100 so I just found an older pdf edition of the textbook that this class used to use and it was fine. none of the homework or tests are based on the textbook, just the lectures, so honestly I wouldn't bother paying for the textbook.

I’ll give it that he really tries to help us with his visuals in his slides, but main thing is that his material is hard to understand in the way he presents his lectures. The class is split between him and Wong and Wong’s lectures and slides are faaaaaar more clear to understand. It’s not a good sign when the own professor gets thrown off in his own slides. I’d skip taking this GE until it’s only Wong teaching...
