I loved this class so much! As of today, this is the best sociology class I've taken at UCLA. Professor Rossman is a great lecturer. All the topics we read were extremely engaging. I really do recommend this class! If I had the chance to take this class again I totally would.

Rossman is an awesome professor.
He really made Mass Comm a interesting topic, and made going to a 1+ hour lecture worth actually attending (his little jokes are HILARIOUS!)

The class consists of a couple of "pop" quizzes, a midterm, and a final.
But honestly the midterm was super easy, just go over your notes from lecture, and the final was even better - NOT CUMULATIVE and the same amount as the midterm but with more time.

Definitely recommend!

The class was not easy. However doing the readings and understanding the methodology, arguments and main points are key to doing well on the final/midterm. Professor Rossman is a funny professor who presents interesting topics so I would definitely take him again! Doing the memos are very helpful for the exams so I would suggest that you do memos for all the readings in order to get the concepts well for the final and midterm. There isn't extra credit but he does podcast his lectures which are really helpful!

It isn't too inconceivable to believe his 20 lectures still aren't enough to disclose both the mundane and outlandish inner-workings of the mass media and the production of culture. There could have been plenty of more ammo left within his unique, machine gun- like oratory tendency. A well-informed professor with an impressive expertise of topics both germane and irrelevant, Rossman uses the lens of a simple magnifying glass to provide a breathtaking glimpse into the field in which he studies so deeply. And irrespective of the fascinatingly ostentatious display of his comprehensive knowledge, there really does exist some valuable substance within the course that goes well with his overall style. Stories, charts, historical anecdotes, and real-life examples all provide an effective illustration of the course concepts that can erroneously be deemed dense and/or merely theoretical.
More compellingly, he places significance on the process and mechanism that is responsible for highlighting the unrecognized difference between success and failure within popular culture. Rossman's Soc M176 leaves you with an invaluable understanding of popular culture that wonderfully distinguishes itself from any other course within the sociology department.
A worthwhile course for any undergraduate student.
