I took this my first quarter at UCLA and I'm kind of disappointed I did because I fear I peaked and will never enjoy another class here as much as this one. The workload was extremely easy, just a two-question quiz before each lecture and the questions are incredibly easy. The readings are also very manageable and often have pictures or are only 7 pages long. The professor even gives you a reading guide to know what to look for in the reading and also gives you paper handouts during class. Everything was really interesting and I was always looking forward to the next topic and the professor gave us many resources to make sure we understand the material, which is already fairly easy to grasp. The "midterms" are just two in-person short answer essays which he gives you a study guide for with example question and even provides that study guide on the actual midterm. Again, the class was so simple, organized, and interesting I 100% recommend!
I was initially drawn to Prof. Greenberg's high reviews on Bruinwalk and took this class. As opposed to the popular sentiment here, I would not recommend taking this class if you're generally looking for a low-effort GE, or an enlightening class that will make you love philosophy.
Why you should take this class:
- Improve your rigor of writing in philosophy
- Exams are fair and not too easy or hard
Why you shouldn't take this class:
- Your grade is entirely dependent on your TA's subjective evaluation of your writing
- I disagree with this class's no electronics policy. I understand how electronics are a distraction, but I believe removing them won't solve any problem -- people can still distract themselves with the absence of electronics.
- The very last take is personal: although the topics discussed in this class are surely interesting, I cannot find the answer to: "Why am I learning this?" "Why does it matter that I know the definition and difference between cognition and consciousness?". I think the right answer should be: "It helps us better differentiate objective truth and subjective speculation, which is a skill that can help us reduce bias in our decision making". Or, it should be "We can set up real-life experiments to validate or disapprove theories and establish facts, and using established facts as foundations, expand to solve more complex problems". However, the lectures never dive into these "applications" and "why"s, and just focus on memorizing different people's attacks and defenses on definitions and opinions. I feel like I learned zero ground truths from this class, and only memorized opinions which aren't even mine, and which you can either argue true or false.
This is my personal take, and probably many others enjoyed this class like the rest of people on Bruinwalk. Don't let me disappoint you, but also don't let the glazing of this class on Bruinwalk make you too happy.
I really loved taking this class. there were 4 essays; one was three paragraphs long, another was two pages long, and the last two were 3-4 pages long. The readings for the class are all posted on CCLE and they are interesting but long. I strongly recommend this class. It was super interesting.
In the beginning of this class, Gabriel informed us that this class would "not be an easy A." By that, he meant it is almost impossible to get an A. Although he does an overall good job of explaining the difficult material, he expects you to basically make this class your entire life. I completed every reading, every quiz, went to every lecture, yet still somehow was unable to get an A on any of the essays that I slaved away on for days. Also, I find him incredibly irritating and arrogant. If you get Esther Nibkin for your T.A., switch out immediately. She may seem chill and easy going, but she will rip apart your essays with unjustified reasoning. Unless you are willing to devote hours upon hours to this class, I strongly suggest not taking it unless you are a Philosophy major.
Professor Greenberg was an extremely insightful and interesting professor. His lectures were always engaging and he did his best to make sure that the class understood the concepts he presented and that we were paying attention. Although his grading was rather hard on the papers, it was fair and gave us plenty of commentary on what we should improve on. I would definitely take another philosophy class with him.
It's definitely one of BEST classes I've came across even if I only got A-. Materials covered were really interesting and the professor did a great job explaining them. My TA was Esther who is helpful and cool too.
It's not an easy GE though and I worked my ass off to get a decent score on my essays. But I never regret taking this class. Love it!
First and foremost, Greenberg is GORGEOUS! He distracted me 100% of the time. Regardless, his classes are fun. The subject is hard to.understand, and some reading are difficult. The essays he assigns are toughly graded. That being said, his lecture are entertaining, his handouts are useful and his office hours help drastically. I would take this instructor time and time again. It's not an easy A but his good looks and awesome lectures are worth the ride! Buckle up, people!
This class was dope! Professor Greenberg is awesome and chill. I really enjoyed his class. The reading is kind of heavy, but it's interesting material for sure. If you take this class, make sure you attend lectures. There is a quiz due before every lecture that consists of two questions: one from previous lecture, and one from the reading. Also, he puts time into his handouts for every lecture, which is awesome because they come through when you're writing your papers.
Overall, this was a great class, and I would definitely take Greenberg again.
This was a very interesting class and the readings, although they were sometimes lengthy or difficult to grasp at first, were relevant to each lecture. This made going to lecture worth the time because Prof. Greenberg made reference to the reading and explained it in greater detail. That said, there are no midterms or in-class finals for this class, which means your grade mostly depends on 4 papers. One short one (5%), a 1.5 page one (15%), and two 3-4 papers (30% each). I'd say the papers were toughly graded, but I can only speak about my TA. So though the class is chill as others have said, if you aren't a very great writer or aren't fond of philosophy in general, don't take this class (or take it as P/NP).
