Quarter: Fall 2020

Sant wasn't too bad, but the online delivery format (for covid) was awful. His course was asynchronous, so during actual lecture he just played his recording via screen share on zoom. His mic was absolutely horrendous and sometimes his speech was just incomprehensible. Additionally, he sometimes messed up his recording so you couldn't see him working through the problem. His teaching style was to do a brief concept overview, then solve 5ish example problems. The example problems were quite similar to the hw, which is about 6 questions per week (very doable). His exams were fair, although the 2 hour time constraint was REALLY pushing it for me. Sant as a professor seems quite unapproachable, but the TA Byron was really helpful.

As long as you take the time to learn the material every week, you should be fine. I personally did not do that, as I would wait until the last second to do everything. If you have the skills to get through 1A, you should be alright. Problems can get a bit messy, and grading scale is very unforgiving if you show up for a test unprepared. Overall, not something to be scared of, but class will require a good amount of time

I feel like Sant gets a lot of hate in these reviews. I really didn't think he was that bad. Don't get me wrong, he could definitely do better explaining topics, but in general the class is very fair. He explained things better at the start of the year and then kinda got bored in the second half of the year and slacked off. We didn't even hear from him the last two weeks lol. HW is pretty short every week. Lecture problems and HW problems are just like what you'll see on the test so definitely study those and make sure you understand them. I also asked my TA for more practice problems to do and used those to prepare for the tests and got 100% on the first one and 88% on the second. I feel like most people just don't prepare that much. If you understand the base concepts you'll do fine. Don't overthink this one, with Sant at the very least you'll know exactly what you're getting.

Technically, Iman Mehdipour taught the class but Gaurav Sant was the listed professor at the beginning so this will be in regards to this class.

Iman's lectures were very thorough AND they were posted on CCLE!! They were great for understanding homework a little better, and he's very responsive to feedback. We used Slack to communicate as a class, which was helpful for asking questions and hearing back from Tandre the TA at great speeds! This class isn't curved, but Iman gave out many "bonus points" through Kahoot quizzes or asking questions in Slack or sending a "creative way to study for the final" which just became a meme channel in the Statics Slack group. We also built popsicle stick bridges in teams for bonus points, and that was one of my favorite memories of the quarter! The class is like the first 5 weeks for Physics 1A with a structural application.
