TL;DR: It was tough but definitely worth
So we basically have to read a novel every week... its kinda a lot but the novels are all really enjoyable reads. It was nice to finally read fun books again since I haven't read novels since high school.
For me, the toughest part of this class was the essays. We had 4 book reviews throughout the quarter (3 short ones, 1 long one) and we had 3 essays for a take home final. The take home final was rough esp cuz it was due in finals week
This professor doesn’t know how to do basic math, and it’s beyond frustrating. Even if you’re averaging an A in the class, he’ll find a way to drop your grade for no reason. He straight-up lied in the syllabus, claiming grades were based on completion, only to change it after we finished the final. He’s dishonest, disorganized, and completely incompetent. Avoid this class at all costs.
Professor Dutton is just a really nice guy. He has great energy. He fosters open discussions, but he isn't afraid to step in and make corrections. I really like how he encourages but doesn't force participation, and I think it's an easy class to build courage in, speak up, and meet new people. The attendance/writing prompts are fun and great conversation starters.
There are usually multiple readings assigned twice a week, and if you wait till the last minute, they can be painful to push through. There were only a couple times where I truly felt like it was too much, so time management is definitely useful. But the reflections are pretty simple and take 10-15 minutes to write if you understood the readings. The midterm and final projects are creative, and I definitely recommend picking the fan fiction option. It's a fun, thought-provoking process but not very stressful. He grades very nicely/based on effort and will give good, constructive feedback on your writing and information.
Overall, great class and would recommend to anyone looking for a fun GE.
This class is very novel-based and essay-based. As long as you read the books and short stories and write the length-appropriate essay, you will get an A. Do not turn in work late. If you turn in 1 or 2 assignment late without an email letting him know, you will get a B/B+. Make sure you email him at least 12hrs if you are going to turn in late. Make sure you read the novel / stories because it is a discussion-based class and he will expect you to provide insight and specific plot information. Class was essentially 7 essays (1000 words), 1 final book review (1500-2000), and an evaluation with questions he ask you to answer.
But, this was an easy class overall. He makes an effort to get to know you and understand where he can improve. He is funny with his comments and is quick to be devil advocate. he will also comment on all of your essays which was cute and informational.
protip if you are taking this class, use goodreads for specific plot info and reviews.
I really enjoyed this class. Even though I could had got a better grade because I procrastinated a lot, I still managed to pass it with a B. The workload is alright, just readings and then do a commentary that is not so long on it twice a week. Also the final and midterms are just doing fan fiction's of those lectures. I would loveeee to take this class again. The professor is also charismatic and so passionate
So glad I took this class!!! Prof. Dutton is so passionate and knowledgeable about SEASIAN literature, and also is very caring and makes an effort to remember all of his students' names. Easy GE, just a lot of reading (don't take this with other classes that have a heavy reading load). SEASIAN 70 was like a fun book club -- each class period, we'd spend the entire time discussing the assigned books. I'd recommend this class to people who enjoy participating in class, reading, and writing (weekly short responses, and for the midterm and final, we had to write fanfiction for one of the books we've read).
This was a great class where we got to explore different religions in Southeast Asia by country and by religious practice. Every week, we had to do four academic article readings and two reflections on said readings. It was pretty chill as long as you got these done. For the midterm and final, you also got the option to write a fictional story based on the course content or create a PowerPoint presentation if you didn't want to write an academic paper. Overall, it was a chill and informative class about Southeast Asia! Definitely would recommend it.
class is a pretty easy GE, only downside is loads and loads of reading. Dutton is super understanding and doesn't really believe in 'grading' per say so as long as u participate and do your best to keep up with the readings, you'll be fine. 2 big papers in this class, weekly write up responses to books, and thats basically it
Dr. Dutton is really passionate about literature, so be prepared to do a lot of reading for this class. That being said, he's also pretty flexible with the reading: he writes summaries of the books and lets you skip 3 of the biweekly reading reviews, and you don't really have to read super thoroughly because all of the work for the class is graded on completion. So, I think it's a good class for people who are really invested and want to read a lot, but there isn't much pressure to read everything so it's also a good class for people who don't want to read too much. Overall, good selection of books and would highly recommend it!

Reading assignments due every week.
1 Long paper
1 Final paper
1 Map quiz
3 short quizzes
This class is definitely doable if you do the reading (even if it's just skimming) and pay attention during lecture. He's very passionate about the material but the lectures are long.
Professor Dutton is very nice and also gave outlines of lectures so we could follow along.
